FCDO: high risk of wildfires from April to October. Turn on emergency alerts on your phone so you receive Greek government warnings for your area. Where to stay with childrenCrete (Chania, Rethymno, Hersonissos), Rhodes (Lindos, Faliraki), Corfu (Kassiopi, Sidari), Kos, Zakynthos, Athens (Plaka, Koukaki) for a city stay.
FCDO advises against all travel to within 10 km of the border with Syria; the coastal resorts, Istanbul and Cappadocia are outside this area. The situation in the Middle East remains unpredictable: be ready for flight cancellations or airspace closures at short notice, and sign up to FCDO email alerts. There is a high risk of wildfires from April to October. FCDO also reports sexual assaults in coastal resorts, including on minors visiting toilets alone: make sure children are always with a trusted adult and never left alone with hotel or excursion staff. People drown every year in the sea and in pools: always supervise children, even if a lifeguard is present. Florida's theme parks before the school summer rush. Every traveller, babies included, needs an approved ESTA before boarding the plane to the US: apply only on the official website or app, at least 72 hours before you fly.
The Atlantic hurricane season normally runs from June to November and can affect Florida and the east coast, with possible flight disruption. If you travel then, follow forecasts from the US National Hurricane Center and obey any evacuation orders from local authorities (source: FCDO). Entry requirementsEvery traveller, including babies and children, needs an approved ESTA (or a visa) before boarding. Apply only on the official ESTA website or the official ESTA Mobile app: the fee is 40.27 US dollars per person, rising to 40.62 US dollars for applications from 16 October 2026. Is the sea warm enough for swimming at the end of May?
In the Canaries, Crete, Rhodes and around Antalya, the sea is about 21 to 23 °C at the end of May: fine for children, a little fresh for some. The Red Sea in Egypt is warmer, around 26 °C.
What are the passport rules for Greece and Portugal?
Each passport, children's included, must be under 10 years old on the day you arrive and valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. No visa for up to 90 days in any 180.
How much data do we need for a week in Greece?
For normal use (maps, messages, social media), allow 4 to 6GB per person over 8 days. We suggest 10GB valid for 15 days: for four eSIMs, that comes to €42.48 in total, group discount included.
Can we install the eSIM before we leave?
Yes, and we recommend it: install it at home on wifi the day before you fly. It only starts when you land and your phone picks up a local network.
