Entry requirementsSpain is in the Schengen area. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you leave the Schengen area. No visa for up to 90 days in any 180 days (all Schengen countries counted together). EES: on your first visit you may have your fingerprints and photo taken at the border, free of charge (children 11 and under: photo only). FCDO advises against all or all but essential travel to some areas (North Sinai, the Libyan border, parts of the Western Desert); the Red Sea resorts are not among them. Regional tensions may disrupt flights. In Red Sea resorts, FCDO reports assaults including on minors: do not leave children unaccompanied. Egypt: warnings (FCDO)

Marrakech riads and souks in the winter sun, or the beaches of Agadir. In February 2027 it is Ramadan: Morocco puts its clocks back an hour, to UK time.

Morocco: practical info

FCDO does not advise against travel to any part of Morocco. It warns that terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks, including in tourist areas, so stay alert. Do not try to cross the closed border with Algeria; Western Sahara has separate advice. Many beaches have little or no lifeguard cover, and quad-bike accidents are frequent: always wear a helmet. Ask before photographing people, especially children. Morocco: travel advice (FCDO) · Morocco: safety and security (FCDO) · Morocco: regional risks (FCDO)

Entry requirementsEvery traveller, including children, needs their own passport with an expiry date at least 3 months after the day you arrive. It must not be damaged: Morocco has refused entry over damaged passports. No visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Make sure border staff stamp your passport on arrival, as travellers without an entry stamp have had trouble leaving.

PlugsEuropean two-pin plugs (types C and E), 220 V: bring a UK-to-Europe adapter.MoneyMoroccan dirham (MAD). It is a closed currency, so you can only get it in Morocco: keep your exchange receipts to change leftover dirhams back before you leave. Declare foreign currency worth 100,000 dirhams or more when you arrive or leave. Carry some cash for the souks; defacing banknotes is illegal.Time differenceSame time as the UK from late March to late October. In UK winter, Morocco is 1 hour ahead, except during Ramadan (expected around February to early March 2027), when Morocco puts its clocks back an hour and is on the same time as the UK. Morocco announces the exact dates each year.DrivingDrive on the right. You need your UK licence plus the 1968 international driving permit (Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 one), which you can only buy in the UK. Zero alcohol: any trace means a fine and possibly prison. Driving your own car: get a green card from your insurer. Hire firms often set a higher minimum age.TippingTipping is customary: around 10% in restaurants, and a few dirhams for porters, guides and hotel staff.
HealthThe UK GHIC does not cover Morocco: take travel insurance that covers medical treatment and repatriation. Public hospitals are limited; private clinics are better but must be paid. Check vaccines at least 8 weeks before you go (hepatitis A and tetanus are advised for most travellers). Keep children away from stray dogs and cats: after any bite or scratch, see a doctor straight away (rabies). Bring enough of any prescription medicine.

Frequently asked questions

When is February half-term 2027?

For most state schools in England, half-term runs from Monday 15 to Friday 19 February, so the break starts on Saturday, 13 February 2027. Scotland's mid-term break is the same week in Edinburgh. Check your council's dates: academies and independent schools can differ.

Where is warm in February half-term?

The Canaries are the warmest place in Europe (around 21 °C, no time difference, about 4 hours' flight). For hotter sun, Egypt's Red Sea resorts reach 23 °C with a 2-hour time difference. Morocco is 20 °C in Marrakech and Agadir, only 3 hours 40 from London.

Do the kids need anything new to travel to Spain or Portugal?

Each passport, children's included, must be under 10 years old on the day you arrive and valid for at least 3 months after you leave the EU. At the border, the EU's Entry/Exit System may take fingerprints and a photo on your first visit (children under 12: photo only).

Will my phone work in the Canaries or Lapland?

It depends on your network. Since Brexit, free EU roaming is no longer guaranteed: several UK networks now charge a daily fee in Europe, and the Canaries count as Spain. Check your plan; an eSIM for Spain costs €9.60 for 10GB over 15 days.

How much data do we need for a week in Tenerife?

For normal use (maps, messages, social media), allow 4 to 6GB per person over 8 days. We suggest 10GB valid for 15 days: for four eSIMs, that comes to €34.56 in total, group discount included.

Can we install the eSIM before we leave?

Yes, and we recommend it: install it at home on wifi the day before you fly. It only starts when you land and your phone picks up a local network.
