Spring break in Mexico usually means a group: college friends splitting a rental, adults on a beach week, or parents with kids out of school. Everyone wants maps, rides, messages and photos, and nobody wants to be the one who is unreachable at the end of the night. This guide covers how much data each person needs, what it costs for a group, and how setup works from the US.

A travel eSIM is a digital SIM that each person installs on their own phone before leaving. Sirocco's eSIM for Mexico gives each traveler their own plan in a single order. Prices below are Sirocco's current prices in euros, from €6.40 per traveler.

Stay connected: what the U.S. Embassy recommends

In its March 2, 2026 message on spring break travel, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico summed up its advice as "Be prepared, be safe and stay connected." Concretely, it asks travelers to:

  • Enroll in STEP, the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.
  • Call 911 in an emergency, ideally with help from a Spanish speaker on the call.
  • Share your plans with friends and family back home.
  • Download the Guest Assist app if you are in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel or elsewhere in Quintana Roo, for emergency assistance.

Every one of these works better when each person in the group has their own working data connection, not just the one friend with an international plan.

Will my US phone plan work in Mexico?

Check before you go. A 2012 FCC tip sheet on international roaming noted that, for most US customers, the plan that covers domestic use does not cover use abroad, and that even unlimited plans at home can be billed per minute, per text or per megabyte overseas. Plans have changed since that document was written, so the useful step is simple: read your plan's terms or ask your carrier. The FCC also recommended turning off automatic downloads and using free Wi-Fi when possible.

Which networks are in Mexico?

Mexico's main mobile operators are Telcel, AT&T, Movistar and Bait, listed in that order by number of active lines according to the federal telecom regulator's April 2026 figures.

How much data do you need for spring break?

These are rough guides per person, not limits:

Profile What it covers Per day 7 days
Light use Messages, maps 0.3 GB 2.1 GB
Regular use Plus social media, photos 0.7 GB 4.9 GB
Heavy use Plus video, video calls 1.5 GB 10.5 GB

A week of maps, ride apps, group chats and posting photos lands close to regular use. Someone who uploads a lot of video or makes video calls home every day is in heavy use. The data calculator helps you estimate per person.

What does Mexico data cost on Sirocco?

Prices vary by destination, so it is worth looking at the Mexico figures before you settle on a plan for everyone. Here are Sirocco's current prices per traveler, in EUR:

Trip Light use Regular use Heavy use
7 days 3 GB: €13.90 5 GB: €25.50 10 GB: €40.50
15 days 5 GB: €29.30 10 GB: €44.20 -

An unlimited option also exists for Mexico. It comes with a fair-use policy: 2 GB per day at high speed, then reduced speed. Its price is shown on the Mexico page. Matching each person's plan to how they actually use their phone is the simplest way to keep the group total in check.

Sirocco charges in euros. The site can show an indicative dollar amount, but the actual charge is in EUR. You can pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card, and no phone number is required to buy.

Group prices: 4 friends, 6 friends, a family

From 3 eSIMs in the same order, a 10% group discount applies to the total, rounded in the customer's favor and shown before payment. One order can include up to 10 travelers, each with their own plan.

Group, 7 days Total with the group discount
4 friends, all on 5 GB €91.80
6 friends, all on 5 GB €137.70
4 friends, all on 10 GB €145.80

For a family of four, plans are usually mixed: the two parents on 5 GB at €25.50 each, a teen on 10 GB at €40.50 and a child on 3 GB at €13.90. With at least 3 eSIMs, 10% comes off the total, and the exact amount is shown in the configurator before payment.

Plans do not have to match. The friend who posts everything can take more data, and the one who mostly uses the hotel Wi-Fi can take less. The discount still applies to the whole order.

How the group gets set up from the US

One adult places the order and enters each traveler. Normally, each person then receives a personal install link by text message. Those text messages can only go to numbers in France, the EU, the UK, Switzerland and Morocco, so they cannot be sent to US numbers. For a group with US phones, each link arrives by email, or the organizer shares it directly. The link opens a step-by-step guide, with a QR code as a backup. If an eSIM is not installed two days before departure, a reminder goes out (this can be turned off).

For a group of adult friends, privacy matters. The organizer sees the status of each eSIM (link sent, opened, installed, connected, out of data), but never sees installation codes, another adult's contact details, or their detailed usage. Before installation, an eSIM can be reassigned if someone drops out of the trip. Once installed, it cannot be transferred.

There is no shared pool. One person's data is never used by anyone else. When someone runs out, their connection stops and nothing extra is charged. The organizer can top up just that person's eSIM, with no reinstall and no effect on the others. Top-ups are available when the offer allows. Unused data becomes credit for a future trip. See topping up a traveler and group data.

Before you fly: check phones and install

  1. Dial *#06# on each phone. If an EID number appears, the phone supports eSIM.
  2. Make sure the phone is unlocked. A phone bought with a carrier plan may be locked; get it unlocked before the trip.
  3. Confirm each model at checkout. Sirocco does not check the model; each person's phone is confirmed when ordering. See the compatibility page.
  4. Install at home on Wi-Fi a few days before leaving, and keep the Sirocco line off.
  5. On arrival, turn the line on, select it for cellular data, and turn on data roaming for that line only.

The plan starts at the first connection to a network in Mexico, so days are not used up before the trip. Do not delete the eSIM after installing it: it cannot always be reinstalled. More in how to install and when does my plan start.

Hotspot, calls and Wi-Fi

Hotspot sharing depends on the offer and the country, and the offer page says so before payment. When it is available, shared data counts against the plan of the person sharing, and running a hotspot all day drains that phone's battery. On a spring break trip where people split up, one eSIM per person is the more practical setup.

The eSIM is data only: no Mexican number, no standard calls or texts. Your regular US line stays active for calls and texts at your carrier's rates, and calling and messaging apps work over the eSIM data. That includes 911: call it from your regular line. Use hotel or rental Wi-Fi for big downloads, such as offline maps and shows for the flight home.

Spring break with kids

For families, a traveler can be set up with a Child profile. The smallest plan for the destination is offered by default, at the same price as an adult plan of the same size. In the free Sirocco app, the child sees remaining data and the end date and can tap "Request data." The child picks an amount, never a price; the parent accepts, changes the amount or declines. Unanswered requests expire after 24 hours with nothing charged.

Child mode is not parental control. It does not filter or block websites, show what the child views, or locate the child. There is no account in the child's name, and purchases are for adults only. More on the kids eSIM page and the family eSIM page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Mexico eSIM cost for a group of four friends?

For 7 days with everyone on 5 GB, the total is €91.80, with the 10% group discount included. An unlimited option also exists for Mexico, with fair use of 2 GB per day at high speed.

Do eSIM prices for Mexico differ from other destinations?

Yes. Prices vary by destination, so check the Mexico page for current prices. Choosing the right amount of data for each person keeps the total down.

Can the install links be texted to our US numbers?

No. Install-link text messages only go to numbers in France, the EU, the UK, Switzerland and Morocco. With US numbers, each person gets their link by email, or the organizer shares it.

What number do I call in an emergency in Mexico?

Dial 911. The U.S. Embassy advises having a Spanish speaker help with the call if possible. The eSIM is data only, so call from your regular line.

Can a minor buy the eSIM for the trip?

No. Purchases are for adults only. Families can give a child a Child profile in the order placed by a parent.

Travel together, connected.

One eSIM per person, one purchase, 10% off from 3 eSIMs.
