T-Mobile has long been known as the friendliest U.S. carrier for travel, because many of its plans include some data abroad. In 2026 the picture is more mixed: included data depends heavily on your plan, and the International Pass, which tops up high-speed data and adds calling, got more expensive in June. This guide looks at T-Mobile international roaming for a family of 1, 2 or 4 lines over 10 days in Japan, Italy and Mexico.
If you are planning Japan, our Japan eSIM page shows per-traveler data plans. For the whole family, the family eSIM page explains how one order covers everyone.
A note on sources: T-Mobile's website blocked automated access on October 4, 2026 (HTTP 403), so we could not read the official International Pass page that day. The T-Mobile prices below come from secondary sources, named in each case. Please confirm the current price in the T-Life app or at My.T-Mobile.com before you buy.
What T-Mobile international roaming includes
Depending on the plan, a T-Mobile line abroad can come with some data already included. According to Holafly's guide, updated September 29, 2026 (secondary source):
- Experience Beyond and Go5G Next: up to 15 GB of high-speed data in 215+ destinations, then unlimited data at up to 256 Kbps.
- Experience More, Go5G Plus and Magenta MAX: up to 5 GB of high-speed data in 215+ destinations.
- Essentials: unlimited texting abroad, but no included roaming data outside Mexico and Canada.
That last point matters for families. Many family accounts mix plans, or use Essentials to keep costs down. If a line has no included data, or if 5 GB will not last 10 days, that line needs an International Pass or another solution.
Mexico and Canada
Most T-Mobile plans include data in Mexico and Canada. According to WhistleOut (secondary source, updated December 9, 2025, before the June 2026 changes), Experience Beyond includes 30 GB of high-speed data there, Experience More includes 15 GB, and Essentials includes unlimited data at 2G speeds. For most T-Mobile families, a trip to Mexico costs $0 extra. That is a real advantage, and we say so plainly.
T-Mobile International Pass: prices in 2026
According to Android Authority (secondary source, article dated June 26, 2026), T-Mobile changed its International Pass prices effective June 25, 2026:
| Pass | Price per line | Before June 25, 2026 | High-speed data (Holafly, secondary) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 day | $10 | $10 | 2 GB |
| 10 days | $50 | $35 | 15 GB |
| 30 days | $75 | $50 | 30 GB |
Each pass also includes unlimited calling for its duration, according to the same sources. Passes are bought per line, not per account.
T-Mobile International Pass cost for a family: 10 days
Japan or Italy
Assumption: each line needs more data than the plan includes, or has no included roaming data, and buys one 10-day pass. For comparison, we also show 10 separate 1-day passes.
| Lines | 10-day pass | Calculation | 10 x 1-day pass | Calculation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 line | $50 | 1 x $50 | $100 | 10 x $10 |
| 2 lines | $100 | 2 x $50 | $200 | 2 x 10 x $10 |
| 4 lines | $200 | 4 x $50 | $400 | 4 x 10 x $10 |
If a parent is on a plan with 15 GB of included high-speed roaming data, that line may need nothing at all for a 10-day trip. The cost then drops by one pass.
Mexico
| Lines | Typical T-Mobile cost |
|---|---|
| 1 line | $0 on plans that include Mexico |
| 2 lines | $0 on plans that include Mexico |
| 4 lines | $0 on plans that include Mexico |
Comparison with a data-only travel eSIM (Sirocco)
Sirocco is a travel eSIM for families. It provides mobile data only: no local phone number and no calls. Each traveler gets their own eSIM and their own plan, added next to the T-Mobile line without replacing it. Your number and WhatsApp stay the same.
Scenario used below: each traveler gets the cheapest Sirocco plan with at least 10 GB and at least 10 days (it can be a more generous plan). The 2-line and 4-line figures are the total for 2 or 4 of those eSIMs, with Sirocco's 10% group discount from 3 eSIMs in the same order already applied. Each traveler can then switch to a different plan, for example a smaller one for a child.
Sirocco bills in euros, and the Sirocco column below is shown in euros. To convert, the European Central Bank reference rate on October 2, 2026 was 1 EUR = 1.1225 USD; your card issuer's rate may differ.
| Destination | Lines | T-Mobile, 10-day pass (secondary source) | Sirocco (EUR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | 1 | $50 (15 GB) | €16.40 |
| Japan | 2 | $100 | €32.80 |
| Japan | 4 | $200 | €59.04 |
| Italy | 1 | $50 (15 GB) | €11.60 |
| Italy | 2 | $100 | €23.20 |
| Italy | 4 | $200 | €41.76 |
| Mexico | 1 | $0 on most plans | €41.40 |
| Mexico | 2 | $0 on most plans | €82.80 |
| Mexico | 4 | $0 on most plans | €149.04 |
Sirocco prices are shown at today's rate and may change; the exact price is displayed before payment.
Compare the two columns, and keep in mind what each one includes:
- The T-Mobile pass includes calling on your own number and 15 GB of high-speed data on the 10-day pass. The Sirocco plans in this scenario have at least 10 GB each and include no calls.
- Included roaming data can mean a line needs nothing extra at all. Check each line before buying anything.
- Mexico and Canada: on most T-Mobile plans you are already covered at no extra cost. Keep your plan.
- Mixed setup: keep T-Mobile on the lines that have included data or need calls, and consider a data eSIM for the lines that would otherwise need a pass, often the children's phones.
Other per-traveler prices are on the Italy and Mexico pages.
Practical tips before you fly
Configure the two lines
- T-Mobile line: on, with data roaming off. Calls and texts to your number still come through; check your plan for any charges when you answer calls abroad.
- Sirocco eSIM: selected for cellular data, with data roaming on.
- On iPhone, keep the T-Mobile line for iMessage and FaceTime.
Detailed steps: turn on data roaming and keep your number abroad.
Watch the slow-speed trap
After included high-speed data runs out, many plans keep you online at very low speeds. Maps and messages may work, but video calls and photo uploads often do not. With kids streaming in the back seat, high-speed data goes faster than you expect. Our data calculator helps you size each traveler's plan.
Install eSIMs before departure
Install each eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi. Sirocco sends every traveler their own install link by text or email.
Your child's phone
- Compatibility: dial *#06#. If an EID appears, the phone supports eSIM. See the compatibility page.
- A smaller plan: 5 GB is often enough for a child for 10 days.
- Child mode: the child's screen shows no prices, there is no account in the child's name, and the parent manages everything. More on the kids eSIM page.
- Top-ups for one traveler: if one child runs out, top up that eSIM alone without reinstalling.
Check your own plan in T-Life
T-Mobile has many current and older plans, each with different travel benefits. Before you leave, open the T-Life app and check, for each line, how much high-speed data it gets abroad and whether it covers Mexico and Canada.
Bottom line
T-Mobile is often generous in Mexico and Canada, and some plans include a good amount of data overseas. But lines without included data, or with only a small allowance, need an International Pass, which costs $50 per line for 10 days since June 25, 2026, according to secondary sources. That is $200 for a family of four in Japan or Italy. Compare that with a data-only eSIM per traveler in the table above, while keeping T-Mobile on the lines that already have what they need.
