Practical guide

Planning a family holiday in Turkey? Here is what to sort out before you fly: passports and permission letters for children, health cover, money, driving and emergency numbers. Every fact comes from an official source, cited and dated.

Entry requirements for Turkey

British citizens

Your passport must have an expiry date at least 150 days after the date you arrive and at least 1 blank page. You will be refused entry with a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.1

With a full British citizen passport, you can visit without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for tourism or business. Other types of British passport need a visa.1

Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough; a birth or adoption certificate helps to show your relationship.2

If you are leaving Turkey with a dual British-Turkish child aged 18 or younger, you may need to show permission to travel from the Turkish parent.1

Planning a day trip to a Greek island? Greece is in the Schengen area and uses the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), so expect a few extra minutes at the border.1

You must carry photo ID in Turkey: keep your passport with you.3

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

U.S. citizens

Your passport must be valid for six months beyond your entry date, with enough space for entry and exit stamps.4

Ordinary passport holders do not need a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.4

Get entry and exit stamps: you need a Turkish entry stamp to fly domestically, and a missing exit stamp can cause trouble on a later visit.4

Every U.S. citizen, children included, needs a U.S. passport book to fly back into the United States. The State Department publishes guidance on dual nationality and on preventing international child abduction.54

Always carry official photo ID, such as a copy of your passport.6

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.

Health and insurance

Turkey's Ministry of Health only asks for proof of polio vaccination from passengers travelling to or from countries with endemic polio, such as Afghanistan or Pakistan, according to the Italian foreign ministry. Talk to your doctor or a travel clinic about anything else.7

UK travellers: at least 8 weeks before the trip, check the latest vaccine advice for Turkey. The GHIC and EHIC are not valid in Turkey, so make sure your travel insurance covers local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation.8

British prescriptions are not accepted in Turkish pharmacies, and some common medicines are controlled in Turkey: check which documents you need before you travel.8

U.S. travellers: Medicare does not apply overseas and most providers only accept cash. The State Department strongly recommends supplemental insurance covering medical evacuation. Carry prescription medicine in its original packaging with your doctor's prescription.9

Money and payments

The currency is the Turkish lira (TRY). Debit and credit cards are widely accepted in supermarkets, restaurants, hotels and shops. Cash machines work well, though Turkish banks usually charge a fee.101112

There is no limit on the foreign currency or lira you can bring in. You must not take out Turkish lira worth more than 5,000 US dollars, and other currency above that value must be declared to Turkish Customs.1

Plugs and electricity

Turkey runs on 220 volts and 50 Hz, with round-pin European-style plugs that fit into recessed wall sockets. UK and US plugs do not fit them, so pack an adapter.13

Getting around and driving

UK licence holders need a 1968 international driving permit or a UK licence notarised in Turkish. The 1949 permit is no longer accepted, and you cannot buy an IDP outside the UK, so get one before you go.3

U.S. licence holders staying up to 180 days can drive with a valid U.S. licence, or with an International Driving Permit and their U.S. licence.14

Traffic drives on the right. Take extra care after dark, especially in rural areas with livestock on the road or narrow, unmarked roads. After an accident with injuries or a disagreement, stay at the scene and do not move the vehicle until the Traffic Police arrive.1314

Big cities have metros, ferries, trains, buses and minibuses. Licensed taxis are metered: use a registered taxi, an app or a pre-booked car, and check the meter is running.143

Time difference and climate

Turkey is on UTC+3 all year: 2 hours ahead of the UK in summer and 3 hours ahead in winter.137

Coastal areas have a temperate Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild to cool, wet winters. The inland Anatolian plateau and the east are drier, with hot summers and cold winters.13

Istanbul has hot, humid summers and damp, rainy winters. On the central plateau, frost and frequent snow are common from November to February, while June to September is very hot, especially on the Mediterranean coast.711

Staying connected as a family

The mobile network covers almost the whole country, with problems only in some inland places. The networks your eSIM uses are listed in the mobile networks section.711

Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The installation guide takes a few minutes.

Before a day out in Cappadocia or the countryside, download offline maps and tickets at the hotel.

The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to make calls, use your usual line at your operator's rates.

Travelling with children

Most towns and cities have stray dogs, sometimes in aggressive packs in parks. Teach children not to approach them, and if anyone is bitten, get medical advice immediately.3

Always supervise children in the sea and in pools, even if they can swim or a lifeguard is present. Many beaches use flags: a red flag means you must not enter the water.3

Teenagers travelling with grandparents or friends: some hotels refuse to check in children aged 17 and under without a parent or guardian unless there is written parental consent, sometimes notarised. Check with the hotel in advance.3

The next Ramadan is likely to begin between early February and early March 2027. During it, check shop and restaurant opening hours.3

Keep photos of every passport and permission letter on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.

Emergency numbers

Dial 112 for an ambulance, the fire service or the police.15

After a road accident, the U.S. State Department also lists the Traffic Police on 155 and the Jandarma on 156.14

From the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative in Turkey.15

The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.

Your questions

eSIM Turkey: frequently asked questions

Questions about the eSIM

Is my phone compatible?

On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.

Detailed iPhone and Android guide

When does my plan start?

The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.

Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?

Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.

What happens when my data runs out?

The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.

Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?

No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.

Questions about the trip

Do I need a visa to visit Turkey?

Not for a holiday. British citizen passport holders and U.S. ordinary passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa.

How long must my passport be valid for Turkey?

For British passports, at least 150 days after the date you arrive, with at least 1 blank page. The U.S. State Department asks for six months beyond your entry date.

I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?

From the UK, a letter of permission from everyone else with parental responsibility, with their contact details and the trip details, plus a birth or adoption certificate to show your relationship.

Our child is a dual British-Turkish national: is there anything to know?

Yes. When leaving Turkey with a dual British-Turkish child aged 18 or younger, you may need to show permission to travel from the Turkish parent.

Are any vaccinations compulsory for Turkey?

Only polio, and only for passengers travelling to or from countries with endemic polio. Check the latest advice at least 8 weeks before you go and ask your doctor about anything else.

Is my GHIC valid in Turkey?

No. Neither the GHIC nor the EHIC is valid in Turkey, so take out travel insurance that covers local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation.

Can I pay by card in Turkey?

Yes. Debit and credit cards are widely accepted in supermarkets, restaurants, hotels and shops. Cash machines work well, but Turkish banks usually charge a withdrawal fee.

Can I drive in Turkey with my licence?

With a UK licence, you also need a 1968 international driving permit, or a licence notarised in Turkish. A valid U.S. licence is accepted for stays up to 180 days. Traffic drives on the right.

Do I need a plug adapter in Turkey?

Yes, if you are coming from the UK or the US. Turkey uses round-pin European-style plugs in recessed sockets, at 220 volts and 50 Hz.

What is the time difference between Turkey and the UK?

Turkey is on UTC+3 all year, so it is 2 hours ahead of the UK in summer and 3 hours ahead in winter.

What is the emergency number in Turkey?

112, for an ambulance, the fire service or the police. Call it from your usual line, as the Sirocco eSIM is for data only.

Can we take a day trip to a Greek island from Turkey?

Yes, but Greece is in the Schengen area and uses the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which can add a few minutes per passenger at the border. Bring every family member's passport.
