Practical guide

Planning a family trip to Mexico? Here is what to sort out before you fly: documents for adults and children, money, plugs, driving and emergency numbers, each fact from an official source, cited and dated.

Entry requirements for Mexico

British citizens

Your passport must be valid for the whole of your stay. The Mexican Embassy in the UK recommends at least 180 days of validity, the longest you can stay as a tourist.1

Tourists do not need a visa. Each passport is stamped with the number of days you may stay. If you arrive by land, fill in an immigration form online.1

At border control you may need to show a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation such as a hotel booking, and that you have enough money for your stay.1

Tourists aged 18 or over can use e-gates at some main airports: keep the printed e-gate ticket, as you must show it when you leave. To leave Mexico, each traveller shows the passport with its entry stamp.1

Visiting Quintana Roo, the state that includes Cancun? Pay its entry tax online before or during your stay and keep the proof: it is checked at the airport before you leave.12

When travelling with a child, you may be asked why you are travelling together and for evidence of your relationship, such as a birth or adoption certificate, divorce or marriage certificates, or a parental responsibility order.1

Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough.3

Children who also hold Mexican nationality and travel without a parent or legal guardian must apply for a permit to leave Mexico.1

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

U.S. citizens

Flying in, everyone needs a passport book: a U.S. passport card cannot be used to board a plane. By land, a passport book or card is accepted, plus an FMM entry permit, even if you stay within 12 miles (20 kilometres) of the border.4

At the airport, Mexican immigration decides how long you may stay and stamps your passport; an E-Gate may print a receipt with a QR code instead.4

On a cruise that leaves from and returns to the same U.S. port, U.S. citizens may use an original or certified birth certificate instead; travellers aged 16 or older also need government-issued photo ID.4

Travellers under 18 who are not travelling with both parents may need a notarized consent letter from each parent who is not on the trip.4

Declare goods worth over 500 US dollars if you arrive by air, or over 300 US dollars by land. E-cigarettes and vaping devices may not be brought in.4

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.

Health and insurance

No vaccinations are required to enter Mexico, according to the Spanish and Portuguese foreign ministries. For medical entry requirements, GOV.UK refers travellers to TravelHealthPro's Mexico guide.251

See a doctor in good time: GOV.UK suggests checking the latest advice at least 8 weeks before the trip, the State Department at least one month before.67

Take travel insurance that covers local treatment and medical evacuation. Not all hospitals deal directly with insurers, and providers usually require payment before treatment or before you leave hospital: be ready to pay and claim later.67

U.S. travellers: most hospitals do not accept U.S. health insurance, including Medicare, and the State Department strongly recommends supplemental insurance covering medical evacuation.7

Prescriptions issued outside Mexico must be translated into Spanish, and a local pharmacy may still refuse a foreign prescription: bring enough medicine for the whole trip.6

Money and payments

The currency is the Mexican peso (MXN). Banks, exchange offices and hotels change euros and dollars, and exchange offices often give better rates.85

Credit cards are taken in almost all hotels, restaurants and shops, as are most debit cards. Foreign cards occasionally fail to connect, so carry a back-up. In tourist areas, prices are often shown in US dollars.58

Amounts over 10,000 US dollars must be declared on arrival. A departure tax may apply when you leave by air or land, though most airlines include it in the ticket price.81

Plugs and electricity

Mexico runs on 110 volts at 60 Hz, with American-style sockets: two flat parallel pins, sometimes with a round earth pin. UK plugs need an adaptor; US plugs fit.5

Getting around and driving

UK photocard licences are valid in Mexico; with an old paper licence, you may need to update it or carry the 1926 international driving permit as well. U.S. licences are valid too.910

Traffic drives on the right, and Mexican car insurance is required for all vehicles. In Mexico City, driving days are restricted by number plate to reduce pollution: ask your car hire company whether this applies to you.11109

Drive between cities in daylight and prefer toll roads (cuota), marked with a number followed by D. Watch for speed bumps (topes), many of them poorly marked, even in towns.108

For long distances, the domestic flight network is good, and first-class or executive coaches are the most direct and reliable buses. For taxis, use an authorised rank (sitio), ask your hotel, or take an authorised pre-paid taxi at the airport.8109

Climate: when to go

The climate ranges from desert in parts of the north to temperate on the plateaus above 2,000 metres, including Mexico City and Puebla, and tropical along every coast and south of the capital.11

Winter in Mexico City is dry and pleasant by day, around 20 °C at midday, but cold at dawn (5 to 6 °C). Summer brings heavy rain, mostly in the afternoon and at night.11

On the coasts it is 25 to 30 °C in winter and 35 to 40 °C the rest of the year. The hurricane season normally runs from June to November on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, and is usually most active from August to October.1192

Staying connected as a family

4G is widespread in towns and cities, with 5G in some central areas, but coverage can be patchy in rural areas. The networks your eSIM uses are listed under mobile networks.510

The State Department advises travelling with a charged phone that works in Mexico. Within 60 days of arrival, you can also download digital proof of entry from the INM services portal.101

Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi with the installation guide, so the whole family is online as soon as you land.

Before a day trip to ruins, cenotes or remote beaches, download offline maps and tickets at the hotel.

The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a local number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.

Travelling with children

Strong currents, rip tides and rogue waves make some beaches dangerous. Never let children swim alone, stay out of the water when black or red flags fly, and remember that not every dangerous beach is marked.12

Some hotel balconies have low railings. Crocodiles live in lagoons and coastal areas, including Cancun: respect warning signs and keep away from the water's edge.9

Give children only boiled or bottled water, and no ice in drinks. Mexico City and many other cities are at high altitude: learn the signs of altitude sickness before you go.67

In Mexico City, seat belts are compulsory in every seat and children may not travel in the front.11

Keep photos of every passport, entry stamp and consent letter on your phone, and paper copies in a separate bag.

Emergency numbers

Dial 911 for an ambulance, the fire service or the police. Not every operator speaks English, so ask a Spanish speaker to help if you can. In Mexico City, emergency buttons on CCTV cameras connect you directly.1376

On toll roads and major highways, dial 078 for bilingual roadside help from the Green Angels, a Mexican government service.10

Mexico City Tourist Police: (0052) 55 5207 4155, or WhatsApp (0052) 55 4891 1166. In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a relative abroad.13

The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.

Your questions

eSIM Mexico: frequently asked questions

Questions about the eSIM

Is my phone compatible?

On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.

Detailed iPhone and Android guide

When does my plan start?

The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.

Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?

Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.

What happens when my data runs out?

The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.

Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?

No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.

Questions about the trip

Do I need a visa to visit Mexico?

Not as a tourist. British citizens need no visa, and Mexican immigration decides on arrival how many days you may stay, shown by a stamp or an e-gate receipt.

How long must my passport be valid for Mexico?

For the whole stay. The Mexican Embassy in the UK recommends at least 180 days of validity, as that is the longest a tourist can stay.

Can I fly to Mexico with a U.S. passport card?

No. Air travellers need a passport book; the card cannot be used to board a plane. It is accepted only for land and sea crossings.

I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?

A letter of consent from the other parent: UK law requires the permission of everyone with parental responsibility, and the State Department advises a notarized letter. Bring birth certificates to show your relationship.

Can children use the airport e-gates?

No: GOV.UK says e-gates are for tourists aged 18 or over. Children go to an immigration officer, who stamps the date of entry and the permitted stay in their passport.

Are any vaccinations compulsory for Mexico?

No vaccinations are required to enter, according to the Spanish and Portuguese foreign ministries. See your doctor well before the trip to check what your family needs.

What is the Quintana Roo entry tax?

A tax for visitors to the state that includes Cancun, payable online before or during your stay. Keep the proof of payment: you must show it at the airport before leaving.

Can I pay by card in Mexico?

Yes, credit cards work in almost all hotels, restaurants and shops, as do most debit cards. Foreign cards occasionally fail to connect, so keep some pesos as a back-up.

Do I need a plug adaptor in Mexico?

From the UK, yes: sockets are American-style, with flat parallel pins, and the supply is 110 volts. Check that your chargers accept that voltage.

Can I drive in Mexico with my licence?

Yes with a UK photocard licence or a U.S. licence; older UK paper licences may need the 1926 international driving permit as well. Mexican car insurance is compulsory, and traffic drives on the right.

Which number should I call in an emergency in Mexico?

911 for an ambulance, the fire service or the police, and 078 for the Green Angels roadside service. Call from your usual line.

When is hurricane season in Mexico?

Normally from June to November, on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, and usually most active from August to October. Winter is the dry season in Mexico City.
