Practical guide

Planning a family trip to Vietnam? Here is what to sort out before you fly: visas and passports for adults and children, money, driving, the seasons and the Tet holiday. Every fact comes from an official source, cited and dated.

Entry requirements for Vietnam

British citizens

You can visit Vietnam without a visa for up to 45 days for tourism. Check that the exit date stamped on arrival is 45 days from your arrival: Immigration will not change it once you have left the airport or land border.1

For a longer stay, you can apply for an e-visa allowing a 90-day stay and multiple entries. It restricts you to the entry and exit points you select when you apply.1

Each passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the date you arrive, have at least 2 blank pages and be undamaged: British nationals have been refused entry and exit because of passport damage.1

Enter and leave Vietnam on the same passport, and always carry photo ID: the authorities accept a printed copy of your passport photo page and visa.12

Since 15 April 2026, travellers arriving at Tan Son Nhat Airport, Ho Chi Minh City, are encouraged to complete a digital arrival card online. It is not mandatory yet, but this may change or extend to other airports.1

You may also be asked to complete a health declaration, which may include proof of vaccinations. Check the guidance from your nearest Vietnamese Embassy before you go.1

Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough; a birth or adoption certificate helps to show your relationship.3

You might be asked for that letter at a UK or foreign border. Single parents whose family name differs from the child's should also carry a divorce or marriage certificate.3

On the Vietnamese side, the German Federal Foreign Office notes that minors travelling alone must carry an official letter of consent from their parents or guardians.4

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK, Auswärtiges Amt. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

U.S. citizens

You need a valid passport and a visa, or a pre-approval letter for a visa on arrival. The passport must be valid for six months beyond your planned stay, with at least one blank visa page.5

You can apply online for a single or multiple entry e-visa on the Vietnam Immigration website, with no local sponsor needed. Applications usually take three to five working days, and the e-visa cannot be renewed or extended inside Vietnam.5

Visas are valid only for the period you request, so allow a margin: delayed travellers will likely face overstay fines or exit delays. Even a typo in a name on the e-visa can lead to refusal of entry.5

Present the printed e-visa with your passport, use the port of entry you selected when applying, and enter and exit on the same passport.5

To fly back into the United States, every U.S. citizen, children included, needs a U.S. passport book: the alternative documents for children only cover land or sea arrivals from Canada or Mexico.6

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.

Health and insurance

No vaccinations are compulsory for Vietnam, according to the Spanish foreign ministry. The Italian foreign ministry notes one exception: yellow fever, for travellers over one year old arriving from a country where it is transmitted.78

UK travellers should check TravelHealthPro's Vietnam guide at least 8 weeks before the trip. Air pollution is a significant problem in the major cities: the State Department advises consulting your doctor before you travel.910

Make sure your travel insurance covers local treatment and medical evacuation: the British Embassy does not pay medical bills. For U.S. travellers, Medicare and Medicaid do not apply overseas, doctors expect immediate cash payment and the State Department strongly recommends medical evacuation insurance.910

Vietnam restricts medicines it classes as addictive or psychotropic, including some for anxiety, depression or insomnia: carrying more than 7 days' supply is illegal. Bring the prescription and a doctor's letter stating how much you need.9

Money and payments

The currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND), which is not convertible outside the country.78

Cards are mostly accepted in large hotels, restaurants with an international clientele and mid- to upmarket shops, often with a 2 to 5% surcharge. Outside the larger cities, cash is often the only accepted payment.84

Only change money at official exchange counters with a clear sign: changing money elsewhere is illegal.2

When entering or leaving, you must declare cash over 15 million Vietnamese dong or over 5,000 US dollars (or the same value in other currencies).1

Getting around and driving

UK licence holders need both the 1968 international driving permit and their UK licence to drive a car or a motorbike. Driving without third-party insurance is illegal, and never leave your passport as a deposit when hiring a vehicle.2

U.S. driving licences and international driving permits are not valid in Vietnam, because the United States is not a party to the Convention on Road Traffic. To drive, you would need a Vietnamese licence.11

Traffic drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory on motorbikes for riders and passengers from the age of 6, and seat belts for front-seat passengers. Any alcohol in your system can lead to a fine.82

Long distances are mostly covered by plane; the main railway line links Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City via Hue, Da Nang and Nha Trang. Metered taxis from larger firms are generally reliable: where possible, ask your hotel or restaurant to book one.8122

Time difference and seasons

Vietnam is 7 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 6 hours ahead in summer.8

In the north, winter (November to April) is mild with little rain, while summer (May to October) is hot, humid and very wet. The south has a wet season from May to November and a dry season from December to April.8

Central Vietnam's rain season runs from October to December, with seasonal flooding in October and November. The tropical storm season runs from May to November.213

The Italian foreign ministry considers November to March the best time to visit the whole country, with less rain, moderate humidity and pleasant temperatures.8

Tet, the Lunar New Year, falls between 21 January and 20 February. The country slows down for about 10 days: banks close, cash machines are not refilled and public transport runs a minimal service.14

Staying connected as a family

The mobile network mainly runs on 4G and 5G, with generally good coverage in the main cities, tourist areas and along the coast. The networks your eSIM uses are listed in the mobile networks section.8

Wi-Fi is widespread in hotels, restaurants and airports. In the most remote areas, service quality can vary.12

Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The installation guide takes a few minutes.

The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a local number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.

Travelling with children

There is a high risk of bites from stray dogs across the country. Keep children away from stray animals, and see a doctor immediately after any bite, even if they are vaccinated.4

Hotels register every guest's passport with the local police at check-in. If you stay with family or friends, you must register at the local police station within 24 hours; some provinces allow online registration.15

Air conditioning indoors is usually very strong: pack an extra layer for the change in temperature. At religious and cultural sites, shoulders and knees should be covered.82

Keep a photo of every passport, entry stamp and e-visa on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.

Emergency numbers

Ambulance: 115. Fire: 114. Police: 113. GOV.UK also lists 112 for national search and rescue and 111 for the child protection hotline. These numbers are operated in Vietnamese only.16

In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative abroad.16

The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.

Your questions

eSIM Vietnam: frequently asked questions

Questions about the eSIM

Is my phone compatible?

On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.

Detailed iPhone and Android guide

When does my plan start?

The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.

Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?

Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.

What happens when my data runs out?

The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.

Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?

No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.

Questions about the trip

Do I need a visa to visit Vietnam?

British citizens can visit without a visa for up to 45 days for tourism. U.S. citizens need a visa, or a pre-approval letter for a visa on arrival; the e-visa can be requested online.

How long must my passport be valid for Vietnam?

For British passports, at least 6 months after the date you arrive, with 2 blank pages. For U.S. passports, six months beyond your planned stay, with one blank visa page.

Do I need to fill in an arrival card for Vietnam?

Since 15 April 2026, travellers arriving at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City are encouraged to complete a digital arrival card online. It is not mandatory yet, but this may change.

I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?

From the UK, a letter of permission from everyone else with parental responsibility, plus a birth or adoption certificate. Bring a marriage or divorce certificate if your family name differs from your child's.

Are any vaccinations compulsory for Vietnam?

No, apart from yellow fever for travellers over one year old arriving from a country where it is transmitted. Ask your doctor about anything else well before you go.

Can I pay by card in Vietnam?

Yes, mainly in large hotels, restaurants with an international clientele and upmarket shops, often with a surcharge. Outside the larger cities, cash in dong is often the only option.

Can I drive in Vietnam with my licence?

With a UK licence, you also need the 1968 international driving permit and third-party insurance. U.S. licences and international driving permits are not valid in Vietnam. Traffic drives on the right.

Which numbers should I call in an emergency in Vietnam?

115 for an ambulance, 114 for the fire service and 113 for the police. The numbers are operated in Vietnamese only. Call from your usual line.

What is the time difference between the UK and Vietnam?

Vietnam is 7 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 6 hours ahead in summer, when the UK is on British Summer Time.

When is the best time to visit Vietnam with children?

The Italian foreign ministry suggests November to March, when there is less rain and temperatures are pleasant across the country. Central Vietnam is wettest from October to December.

Is it a good idea to travel during Tet?

You can, but between 21 January and 20 February the country slows down for about 10 days: banks close, cash machines are not refilled and transport is reduced. Withdraw cash beforehand.

Is there mobile coverage across Vietnam?

4G and 5G coverage is generally good in the main cities, tourist areas and along the coast; quality can vary in remote areas, so download offline maps before you set off.
