Practical guide

A family trip to the United States needs some paperwork well before you fly: an ESTA for every traveller, the right letters for children and solid travel insurance. Every fact below comes from an official source, cited and dated.

Entry requirements for the USA

British citizens

You need approval before you travel: either an ESTA or a valid US visa. Apply for an ESTA through the Official ESTA Application Website or the ESTA Mobile app.1

You can apply at any time before travel, but US Customs and Border Protection recommends applying as soon as you start planning, ideally before you buy flights. Every traveller needs an e-passport with an embedded chip.2

An ESTA is usually granted for two years, or until the passport expires if sooner. If yours lacks the selfie photograph now required, you may need a new one: check your ESTA account before you travel.31

Your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay. If you change planes in another country, check its rules: many require at least 6 months' validity.1

The Visa Waiver Program covers tourism and business stays of 90 days or less. An ESTA does not guarantee entry, and overstaying can lead to detention and future bans on re-entry.31

You cannot normally get an ESTA if you were in Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen on or after March 2011, or in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021.1

Every child, whatever their age, needs their own ESTA, and anyone aged 17 and under must be able to explain the purpose, location and length of the visit if asked. A relative can fill in a child's application.31

A child travelling alone, with one parent, or with someone who is not a parent or legal guardian needs a letter of consent from one or both parents, preferably in English and notarised. US officials can refuse entry over safeguarding concerns about a child.1

Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. Carry a birth or adoption certificate too, and a marriage or divorce certificate if you are a single parent with a different family name from your child.4

Declare all food and other agricultural items on arrival: meat, fresh fruit and vegetables may be prohibited, so finish the children's snacks on the plane.5

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.

Health and insurance

No vaccinations are compulsory for the US. At least 8 weeks before you go, check the latest vaccine advice for the US and ask your doctor about anything else.678

Medical treatment is expensive and there are no special arrangements for British visitors. Make sure your travel insurance covers treatment and repatriation for the whole family.7

Some hospitals ask non-US residents for a deposit on admission: send any request for funds to your insurer first, and only pay if they advise you to.7

UK prescriptions are not valid in the US, and some prescription drugs cannot be taken in. For pharmacy medicines there, you need a prescription from a US provider, such as an urgent care facility.7

Money and payments

The currency is the US dollar (USD). Credit cards are the most common way to pay, and cash machines work as they do in Europe.9

You must report amounts over 10,000 US dollars when entering or leaving the US. For a family, the threshold applies to the total you carry together, not to each person.10

Getting around and driving

You can drive with a UK photocard licence, but you may also need the 1949 international driving permit: requirements vary from state to state. You cannot buy an IDP outside the UK, so get one before you travel.11

Car hire firms often have stricter rules, such as a year of driving experience, a higher minimum age or an IDP. Child car seat rules also vary from one state to another.118

In many states you may turn right at a red light after coming to a full stop, unless a sign says otherwise. Never pass a stopped school bus with its warning lights on, even from the opposite direction.12

Fuel is sold by the US gallon, equal to 3.78 litres. Interstate highways are mostly toll-free, but some sections and bridges charge tolls.8

Without a car, the bus, rail and domestic flight networks are well developed, and big cities have metro systems. Trains are most useful on the Boston to Washington corridor.129

Time difference and when to go

The East Coast is 5 hours behind the UK and the West Coast 8 hours behind. US summer time, used almost everywhere, starts earlier and ends later than in Europe, so for a few weeks each spring and autumn the gap is an hour shorter.8

Climates range from polar in Alaska to subtropical in southern Florida. California has mild winters and hot summers, while winters can be extremely cold in the Midwest and the north, with frequent snowstorms on the East Coast.128

The Atlantic hurricane season normally runs from June to November and the Pacific season from May to November, affecting coastal regions and Hawaii. In summer, avoid the desert areas east and north-east of Los Angeles and Phoenix.118

Staying connected as a family

Landline and mobile networks work well and are stable across the vast majority of the country. The networks your eSIM uses are listed in the mobile networks section.9

Install everyone's eSIM over Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online on landing. The installation guide takes a few minutes.

Before a day in a national park, download offline maps at the hotel.

The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a local number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.

Travelling with children

Never leave children alone in the hotel room or the car, even briefly. The German foreign office advises that children under eight should never be left unsupervised, and children under 13 only very briefly.12

Children, babies included, are expected to wear a swimsuit, and changing or breastfeeding a baby in public may cause offence in some places.13

Keep photos of every passport, ESTA confirmation and consent letter on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.

Emergency numbers

Dial 911 for an ambulance, the fire service or the police, anywhere in the US. If you are referred for treatment, contact your insurer or medical assistance company quickly.147

In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative abroad.14

The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.

Your questions

eSIM United States: frequently asked questions

Questions about the eSIM

Is my phone compatible?

On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.

Detailed iPhone and Android guide

When does my plan start?

The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.

Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?

Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.

What happens when my data runs out?

The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.

Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?

No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.

Questions about the trip

Do I need a visa to visit the USA?

Not for tourist stays of 90 days or less under the Visa Waiver Program, but you need an approved ESTA before you travel. If you are not eligible for an ESTA, apply for a visa.

Does my baby need an ESTA?

Yes. Children of any age need their own ESTA approval, linked to their own passport. A parent or other relative can submit the application for them.

When should I apply for an ESTA?

As early as possible. US Customs and Border Protection recommends applying as soon as you start planning, ideally before you buy flights.

How long must my passport be valid for the USA?

For the whole of your planned stay. If you change planes in another country, check its rules: many require at least 6 months' validity.

I am travelling alone with my children: what do I need?

A letter of consent from the other parent, preferably in English and notarised, plus a birth or adoption certificate. Under UK law you also need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility.

Are any vaccinations compulsory for the USA?

No. At least 8 weeks before the trip, check the latest vaccine advice for the US and talk to your doctor about anything else.

Can I take snacks into the USA?

Declare all food and agricultural items when you arrive. Meat, fresh fruit and vegetables may be prohibited, so it is simplest to finish them on the plane.

Can I drive in the USA with my UK licence?

Yes, with a photocard licence, but some states also want the 1949 international driving permit. Get it in the UK before you go, as you cannot buy one abroad.

What is the time difference between the UK and the USA?

The East Coast is 5 hours behind the UK and the West Coast 8 hours behind. For a few weeks in spring and autumn the gap is an hour shorter.

When is hurricane season in the USA?

The Atlantic season normally runs from June to November and the Pacific season from May to November. Coastal regions and Hawaii are the areas affected.

What number do I call in an emergency in the USA?

911, for an ambulance, the fire service or the police, wherever you are in the country. Call from your usual line, as the Sirocco eSIM is for data only.
