Practical guide

Every member of the family, babies included, needs an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) before flying to the UK. Here is what else to prepare, from health cover to emergency numbers, based on official sources, cited and dated.

Entry requirements for the UK

U.S. citizens

Each passport must be valid for the whole length of your stay. U.S. passport holders can use the ePassport gates when they arrive.1

U.S. citizens visiting for tourism or to see family for 6 months or less must have an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) before they travel. It costs 20 pounds: apply only on GOV.UK or in the official UK ETA app, as other websites may charge more.123

A decision usually arrives by email within a day, but it can take up to 3 working days: wait for the confirmation before you fly. The ETA lasts 2 years, or until the passport expires if sooner, and covers as many trips as you like.2

The ETA is linked to the passport you applied with, and it does not guarantee entry. Changing planes in the UK? You also need one if you pass through border control.23

Babies and children need their own ETA too. You can apply for the rest of the family: in the app if they are with you, otherwise online with a photo of their passport and of their face.32

If you do not seem to be the child's parent, for example because your surname is different, border officers may ask you to prove the relationship. Carry a birth or adoption certificate, a marriage or divorce certificate, or a letter from the parent giving permission, with their contact details.4

Continuing to other countries after the UK? Many require a passport valid for 6 months or more, so check each country's rules.1

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, GOV.UK. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.

Health and insurance

No vaccinations are required to visit the UK, according to the Italian foreign ministry and VisitScotland. Talk to your doctor before you travel.56

Free NHS treatment is only for UK residents, EU nationals and some visa holders. Tourists are charged 150% of the cost of any NHS treatment, and Medicare and Medicaid do not work overseas.7

For visits of less than 6 months, the NHS asks visitors to be covered by personal medical insurance. The State Department recommends supplemental insurance that covers medical needs and possible evacuation.87

Some medicines approved in the U.S. are controlled in the UK and need an additional licence. Bring enough for the whole trip, in the original labelled packaging, with a copy of the prescription.7

Money and payments

The currency is the pound sterling (GBP). Cash machines and card payments are available everywhere, and many shops now accept only card or mobile payments, not cash.910

Contactless card payments are in general use. To change money, Post Offices offer travel money and foreign exchange services.116

Plugs and electricity

Plugs are Type G, with three pins, according to the tourist boards of Scotland and Northern Ireland. You will need an adaptor for two-pin plugs; any electrical shop sells them.611

The standard UK supply is 230 volts according to VisitScotland, and 240 volts according to Tourism Northern Ireland. Visitors from some countries need a transformer as well as an adaptor.611

Getting around and driving

Traffic drives on the left, unlike in the United States. Read the Highway Code before driving, and check on the UK Government website whether your U.S. licence is valid in the UK.12

The motorway speed limit is 70 mph unless a lower limit is posted. Using a hand-held mobile while driving is illegal; only hands-free devices are allowed.12

The drink-drive limit is roughly 0.05 in Scotland and 0.08 elsewhere in the UK, so a single drink can be too much. In central London, driving in certain areas incurs a congestion charge, with fines if unpaid.1312

Public transport is widespread and easy to use. For timetables, see National Rail Enquiries, Traveline Scotland and, in Northern Ireland, Translink.12

Time zone and weather

In winter the UK is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Clocks go forward one hour on the last Sunday in March for British Summer Time (BST), and back on the last Sunday in October.14

The climate is temperate, damp and windy. Summers are not very hot and often rainy, rarely above 30 degrees; winters are harsh in northern England and Scotland.5

It rains all year round: March to June are usually the driest months, November to January the wettest. For Northern Ireland, the tourist board suggests April to October for the best weather.511

Staying connected as a family

Most places to stay offer Wi-Fi, as do many cafés and visitor attractions, according to VisitScotland. The networks your eSIM uses are listed in the mobile networks section.6

On your usual plan, your phone should switch to a UK network, but call and data charges vary: check with your provider before you leave.6

On the London Underground, 4G and 5G coverage now reaches a growing number of stations.15

Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The installation guide takes a few minutes.

The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a UK number, use your usual line at your provider's rates.

Travelling with children

In London, a fare-paying adult can travel with up to 4 children under 11 free of charge on Transport for London services. Buses and trams are free for them too, unless they look older than 10.16

Seat belts and child car seats are required by law. Under-3s need a restraint suited to their weight; children aged 3 to 12, and any child under 135 cm, need an appropriate child restraint.125

Many American visitors are hurt because they forget that traffic comes from the opposite direction. Teach children to look both ways before crossing, and do not expect vehicles to stop for you.12

With a pushchair, plan for stairs: many Underground and National Rail stations have no lifts and long corridors, while UK buses have lowering platforms.13

Keep photos of every passport and every ETA confirmation email on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.

Emergency numbers

For all emergencies, dial 999. The Portuguese foreign ministry notes that 112 also works.717

Call NHS 111 if you urgently need medical help or advice but it is not life-threatening. For non-emergency police matters, dial 101.85

The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.

Your questions

eSIM United Kingdom: frequently asked questions

Questions about the eSIM

Is my phone compatible?

On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.

Detailed iPhone and Android guide

When does my plan start?

The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.

Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?

Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.

What happens when my data runs out?

The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.

Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?

No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.

Questions about the trip

Do U.S. citizens need a visa for the UK?

Not for tourism or family visits of 6 months or less. You do need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA), approved before you travel.

Does my baby need an ETA?

Yes. Each person travelling needs an ETA, including babies and children. One parent can apply for the whole family.

How much does an ETA cost and how long does it take?

It costs 20 pounds on GOV.UK or the UK ETA app. You usually get a decision by email within a day, but it can take up to 3 working days.

How long is a UK ETA valid?

For 2 years, or until the passport you applied with expires if that is sooner. You can make as many trips as you like during that time.

How long must my passport be valid for the UK?

For the entire length of your stay. If you continue to other countries afterwards, check their rules: many require 6 months or more.

I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?

If your surname differs from your child's, border officers may ask you to prove the relationship. A birth or adoption certificate, plus a marriage or divorce certificate, will help.

Are any vaccinations required for the UK?

No vaccinations are required to visit, according to VisitScotland and the Italian foreign ministry. Ask your doctor about anything else before you go.

Will my U.S. health insurance cover me in the UK?

Check your plan: Medicare and Medicaid do not work overseas, and tourists are charged 150% of the cost of NHS treatment. Supplemental insurance covering evacuation is recommended.

Do I need a plug adaptor in the UK?

Yes. The tourist boards of Scotland and Northern Ireland describe three-pin Type G plugs and a 230 to 240 volt supply. Visitors from some countries also need a transformer.

Can I drive in the UK with my U.S. licence?

Check on the UK Government website whether your licence is valid. Remember that traffic drives on the left and child car seats are required by law.

What is the emergency number in the UK?

Dial 999 for all emergencies; 112 also works. For urgent medical help that is not life-threatening, call NHS 111. Use your usual line.

When is the best time to visit the UK with children?

It rains all year, but March to June are usually the driest months and summers rarely pass 30 degrees. In Northern Ireland, the tourist board suggests April to October.
