Practical guide
Planning a family trip to Tunisia? Here is what to sort out before you fly: entry documents for adults and children, money, getting around and emergency numbers. Every fact comes from an official source, cited and dated.
Entry requirements for Tunisia
British citizens
Your passport should be valid for the whole of your stay. You will be refused entry without a valid travel document or with a passport reported lost or stolen, and a damaged or torn passport can cause problems when you leave.1
You can visit without a visa for up to 90 days. Border officials stamp your passport on arrival and check the length of your stay when you leave: overstaying without a valid reason means a fine.1
On arrival, officials can ask for your contact details, your return or onward tickets and proof of accommodation. A small number of visitors have been refused entry or delayed for lack of evidence of where they were staying.1
British-Tunisian dual nationals should enter and leave Tunisia on the same passport, and need a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement to return to the UK.1
Check before packing walkie-talkies, including toy ones, or smart glasses: devices with recording or transmission functions may be restricted or confiscated for the length of your visit. Drones need prior authorisation.1
Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough, and a birth or adoption certificate helps to show your relationship.2
You might be asked for that letter at a UK or foreign border. Single parents whose family name differs from the child's should also carry a divorce or marriage certificate.2
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
U.S. citizens
A valid passport is required. U.S. passport holders do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days; a longer stay requires a residence permit from the central police station of your district in Tunisia.3
Tunisia expects dual U.S.-Tunisian citizens to enter and exit on their Tunisian passports. Even if you enter on a U.S. passport, you will need a valid Tunisian passport to leave.3
Every child needs a U.S. passport book to fly home: the birth-certificate option only applies to children arriving by land or sea from Canada or Mexico. The State Department also publishes guidance on preventing international child abduction.43
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.
Health and insurance
No vaccinations are compulsory for Tunisia, according to the Spanish and Portuguese foreign ministries. The Italian ministry lists one exception: yellow fever, for travellers over one year old arriving from a country where it is transmitted.567
At least 8 weeks before you travel, check the latest vaccine advice for Tunisia and ask your doctor.8
There is no free medical care for foreign nationals: private clinics expect payment on the spot, sometimes before treatment. Make sure your travel insurance covers treatment and repatriation.8
U.S. travellers: Medicare and Medicaid do not apply overseas and most hospitals want cash. The State Department strongly recommends supplemental insurance covering medical evacuation.9
Keep prescription medicines in their original packaging, with a note from your doctor. Plan ahead: the State Department reports severe shortages of medicines in Tunisia.89
Money and payments
The currency is the Tunisian dinar (TND), divided into 1,000 millimes. It cannot be taken into or out of the country, so you will get it once you arrive.10
Tunisia has strict currency controls. If you bring foreign currency, including pounds, check whether you must declare it on arrival, and keep the declaration and official exchange receipts: undeclared currency may be confiscated.1
The Italian foreign ministry gives the figure: to take more than 5,000 dinars' worth of foreign currency back out, you must declare it when you arrive.7
International credit cards are accepted in most hotels and tourist centres but rarely in shops and small restaurants. Cash machines are available in most towns.11
Expect to pay a hotel tax on arrival, per person per night at 3-star hotels and above. It is charged for ten nights at most and cannot be reclaimed if you leave early.1
Getting around and driving
With a UK licence, you can drive for up to one year if you also hold a 1968 international driving permit, which you must get before leaving the UK. You also need a green card proving minimum insurance cover.12
Traffic drives on the right. Speed limits are 110 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h elsewhere and 70 km/h on Djerba, and motorway tolls are paid in cash.711
Avoid driving after dark outside Tunis and the main resorts: roads can be unlit, and there may be vehicles without lights and livestock on the road.1312
Seat belts are compulsory in the front, and children should not ride in the front seats.7
Between towns, shared taxis called louages carry five passengers with their luggage. In towns, metered taxis and buses are the norm, and Tunis has a light rail network, the « métro léger ». Trains are fairly slow, but inexpensive and punctual.1411
Time difference and climate
Tunisia is on GMT+1 all year: one hour ahead of the UK in winter, and on the same time as the UK in summer.107
The climate is Mediterranean in the north and along the east coast, semi-arid inland and in the south. Summers are dry and hot, averaging 31 degrees, but pleasant on the coast thanks to the sea breeze; winters are fresh and humid in the north, mild and dry in the south.15
Spring and autumn temperatures hover around 25 degrees. In the far south, summer peaks above 40 degrees are not unheard of.15
Ramadan next starts in February 2027. During that month, check shop and restaurant opening hours.12
Staying connected as a family
Mobile networks work well across the country, except in remote rural areas and the semi-desert south. The networks your eSIM uses are listed in the mobile networks section.6
In summer, heatwaves can lead to temporary power cuts, which may briefly affect air conditioning, mobile networks, internet connections and, in extreme cases, card payments.12
Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The installation guide takes a few minutes.
Before a day trip into the desert, download offline maps and tickets at the hotel.
The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a Tunisian number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.
Travelling with children
Some beaches use a flag system: learn it and follow any warnings. Always supervise children in the water, even if they can swim or a lifeguard is present.12
Tap water is not drinkable in many areas. Ask for bottled water in restaurants and hotels, and remember that ice may be made from tap water.9
Many stray dogs live on the outskirts of large towns. Teach children not to touch or feed animals, and see a doctor as soon as possible after any bite or scratch.167
Keep photos of every passport and permission letter on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.
Emergency numbers
Ambulance: 190. Fire and car accidents: 198. Police in towns: 197. National Guard in rural areas: 193.17
The Tunisian National Tourist Office also lists 197 for the tourist police.10
British Embassy in Tunis: +216 71 108 700. In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a relative abroad.117
The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.
Your questions
eSIM Tunisia: frequently asked questions
Questions about the eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.
The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.
Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?
Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.
Do I keep my usual number?
Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.
What happens when my data runs out?
The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.
Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?
There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.
Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?
No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.
Questions about the trip
Do I need a visa to visit Tunisia?
Not for a holiday: British citizens can visit without a visa for up to 90 days, and U.S. passport holders do not need one for stays of up to 90 days.
How long must my passport be valid for Tunisia?
GOV.UK says it should be valid for the whole of your stay. The U.S. State Department simply requires a valid passport. A passport reported lost or stolen will be refused.
Can I travel to Tunisia with a damaged passport?
It is risky: GOV.UK warns that a damaged or torn passport may cause difficulties when you try to leave. Check every passport in the family well before you go.
I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?
From the UK, a letter of permission from everyone else with parental responsibility, plus a birth or adoption certificate. Bring a marriage or divorce certificate if your family name differs from your child's.
We are a dual British-Tunisian or U.S.-Tunisian family: which passport should we use?
British-Tunisian dual nationals should enter and leave on the same passport. Tunisia expects dual U.S.-Tunisian citizens to enter and exit on their Tunisian passports.
Are any vaccinations compulsory for Tunisia?
No, according to the Spanish and Portuguese foreign ministries; the Italian ministry lists yellow fever for travellers arriving from a country where it is transmitted. Ask your doctor about anything else.
Can I bring Tunisian dinars from home?
No. The dinar cannot be taken into or out of the country. Bring foreign currency or a card, and keep official exchange receipts.
Can I pay by card in Tunisia?
In most hotels and tourist centres, yes, but rarely in shops and small restaurants. Cash machines are available in most towns.
Is there a hotel tax in Tunisia?
Yes. It is paid on arrival, per person per night at 3-star hotels and above, for a maximum of ten nights, and cannot be reclaimed if you leave early.
Can I drive in Tunisia with my UK licence?
Yes, for up to one year, together with a 1968 international driving permit bought before you leave and a green card for insurance. Traffic drives on the right.
What is the time difference between the UK and Tunisia?
Tunisia is one hour ahead of the UK in winter and on the same time in summer, as it stays on GMT+1 all year.
When is the best time to visit Tunisia with children?
In spring and autumn, temperatures hover around 25 degrees. Summer averages 31 degrees, and peaks can pass 40 degrees in the far south.
Which numbers should I call in an emergency in Tunisia?
190 for an ambulance, 198 for fire and car accidents, 197 for the police in towns and 193 for the National Guard in rural areas. Call from your usual line.
Can my child bring a toy walkie-talkie to Tunisia?
Check first. GOV.UK says devices with transmission functions, including toy walkie-talkies, may be restricted or confiscated for the length of your visit.
