Practical guide
Planning a family trip to Thailand? Here is what to sort out before you fly: entry rules for adults and children, the Digital Arrival Card, money, plugs, seasons and emergency numbers. Every fact comes from an official source, cited and dated.
Entry requirements for Thailand
British citizens
Your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive and at least 1 blank page. You will be refused entry with a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.1
From 15 September 2026, under the visa exemption scheme you can stay for up to 30 days, for tourism only. Visa-exempt entry is normally limited to two entries per calendar year.1
You may be asked to prove you have enough money for your stay (at least 10,000 Thai baht per person or 20,000 per family) and onward or return travel. British nationals have been refused entry without this evidence.1
Every foreign national must complete the online Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before arrival, within 3 days before landing. The Immigration Bureau portal lets you submit it individually or as a group.12
Overstaying brings a fine of 500 Thai baht a day, up to 20,000 baht, and a risk of detention, deportation or a re-entry ban. Dual nationals should leave Thailand on the passport they used to enter.1
Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough; you might be asked for it at a UK or foreign border.3
A birth or adoption certificate helps to show your relationship with the child, and single parents whose family name differs from the child's should carry a divorce or marriage certificate. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the proof-of-funds rule does not apply to children under 12.34
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK, Tourism Authority of Thailand. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
U.S. citizens
The Tourism Authority of Thailand lists the United States among the 60 countries and territories whose passport holders can stay visa-free for tourism for up to 30 days from 15 September 2026. The State Department page still mentions visits of fewer than 60 days, so check the Royal Thai Embassy website before you book.56
The State Department strongly recommends a passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date. Pre-arrival online registration is required, and officials or airline staff may ask for your onward or return ticket or proof of funds.6
Always carry a digital or paper copy of each passport identification page and current Thai visa while in Thailand.6
Children travelling abroad need their own U.S. passport, which they also need to fly back into the United States.78
If a child is travelling with only one parent, carry a letter of consent from the other parent, preferably in English and notarized. If the child travels with a guardian or alone, both parents should sign it.7
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: Tourism Authority of Thailand, U.S. Department of State, USAGov, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.
Health and insurance
The only vaccination requirement for entry is a yellow fever certificate if you are coming from a country listed as a transmission risk. Consult your doctor or healthcare provider well before you travel.1910
All hospitals require a guarantee of payment before treating patients. Private hospitals are of a high standard but can be expensive, so make sure your travel insurance covers local treatment and medical evacuation.11
U.S. travellers: Medicare and Medicaid do not apply overseas, and hospitals ask for payment up front, not always by credit card. The State Department strongly recommends supplemental insurance covering medical evacuation.12
Hospitals and pharmacies usually accept UK prescriptions. You may bring up to a 30-day supply of personal medicine; keep it in its original packaging with the doctor's prescription.1112
Money and payments
The currency is the Thai baht (THB). Card payment is widespread, and many marked cash machines accept credit and debit cards.1013
Some supermarkets do not take cards and small shops rarely do, especially outside the big cities, so keep some cash. Change money only at authorised exchange offices, and use cash machines inside banks.1413
Plugs and electricity
Electricity runs at 220 volts and sockets are compatible with European-style plugs (type C or F), so UK and U.S. plugs need a travel adaptor. U.S. travellers should check that chargers and appliances accept 220 volts.10
Getting around and driving
UK licence holders need both the 1968 international driving permit and their UK licence when driving; you cannot buy the permit outside the UK. Other foreigners can drive with an international driving permit, a Thai licence or a licence from an ASEAN country.1516
Traffic drives on the left. Helmets are compulsory for motorbike riders and passengers, and seat belts must always be worn.1716
In Bangkok, the BTS Skytrain, the Airport Rail Link and the MRT underground are reliable, air-conditioned and often faster than the traffic. Cities outside Bangkok usually have basic public transport and no metered taxis.17
Many boats link the mainland and the islands. Avoid any that look overloaded or poorly maintained, especially in rough monsoon seas.15
Time difference and seasons
Thailand is on GMT+7: 7 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 6 hours ahead during British Summer Time. For U.S. travellers, the gap depends on your home time zone.1018
The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes three seasons: hot from March to May (28 to 38°C on average), rainy from May to October, and cooler from November to February (18 to 28°C), a comfortable time for sightseeing.19
On Koh Samui and in south-east Thailand, the rainy season is usually from November to March.15
Staying connected as a family
Mobile reception (3G and 4G) is good in urban centres and most rural areas. The networks your eSIM uses are listed in the mobile networks section.18
The official Thailand Tourist Police app lets you contact the tourist police online, even without a Thai SIM card.20
Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The installation guide takes a few minutes.
The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a local number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.
Travelling with children
Air quality can be poor: farm burning in Chiang Mai and the north, roughly February to late April, and dust in Bangkok from December to February. Infants, children and teenagers are among those most at risk.12
Swim at beaches with lifeguards and follow the flag system, especially red flags. Jellyfish can come close to the shore, particularly in the rainy season from May to October.15
Tap water is not drinkable in many areas, and ice may be made from it: ask for bottled water.12
Dress modestly for temples, and explain to children that touching someone's head is impolite.10
Keep photos of every passport and consent letter on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.
Emergency numbers
Tourist police: 1155, available 24 hours. Police: 191. Ambulance: 1669. Fire: 199. The 191 line also handles ambulance and fire calls.2010
Outside Bangkok and the major cities, ambulances can be unreliable; with a serious injury, it may be quicker to go to the nearest major hospital by taxi or private car.12
From the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative in Thailand.20
The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.
Your questions
eSIM Thailand: frequently asked questions
Questions about the eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.
The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.
Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?
Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.
Do I keep my usual number?
Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.
What happens when my data runs out?
The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.
Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?
There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.
Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?
No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.
Questions about the trip
Do I need a visa to visit Thailand?
Not for tourism. British citizens can stay up to 30 days visa-free from 15 September 2026. The Tourism Authority of Thailand includes U.S. passport holders in the same 30-day scheme, while the State Department page still mentions 60 days: check with the Royal Thai Embassy.
What is the Thailand Digital Arrival Card?
An online form that every foreign national must complete before arriving by air, land or sea, within 3 days before arrival. It is run by the Immigration Bureau at tdac.immigration.go.th and can be submitted for a whole group.
How long must my passport be valid for Thailand?
For British passports, at least 6 months after the date you arrive, with at least 1 blank page. The U.S. State Department strongly recommends six months of validity beyond your arrival date.
Will I have to show money when I arrive?
You may. GOV.UK mentions at least 10,000 Thai baht per person or 20,000 per family, plus onward or return travel. The Tourism Authority of Thailand says the proof-of-funds rule does not apply to children under 12.
I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?
A letter of permission from the other parent. GOV.UK says it should include their contact details and the trip details; USAGov prefers a notarized letter in English. A birth certificate helps to show your relationship.
Are any vaccinations compulsory for Thailand?
Only a yellow fever certificate, and only if you are coming from a country listed as a transmission risk. Ask your doctor about anything else well before you travel.
Can I bring my children's prescription medicines?
Yes. Hospitals and pharmacies usually accept UK prescriptions, and up to a 30-day supply can be brought in. Keep medicines in their original packaging with the prescription.
Do I need a plug adaptor in Thailand?
Yes, for UK or U.S. plugs: sockets are compatible with European-style plugs (type C or F) and the supply is 220 volts.
Can I drive in Thailand with my licence?
With a UK licence, you also need the 1968 international driving permit, bought before you leave. Other foreigners can use an international driving permit. Traffic drives on the left.
What is the time difference with Thailand?
Thailand is on GMT+7, with no clock change: 7 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 6 hours ahead in British Summer Time.
When is the best time to visit Thailand with children?
The cooler months from November to February (18 to 28°C) suit outdoor activities and city visits. The rainy season usually runs from May to October, and from November to March on Koh Samui.
Which numbers should I call in an emergency in Thailand?
1155 for the tourist police, 191 for the police, 1669 for an ambulance and 199 for the fire service. Call from your usual line: the Sirocco eSIM is for data only.
Is mobile coverage good across Thailand?
Reception is good in urban centres and most rural areas, according to the Italian foreign ministry. Download offline maps before trips to remote national parks or islands all the same.
