Practical guide
Planning a family trip to South Korea? Here is what to sort out before you fly: entry documents for adults and children, money, plugs, driving and emergency numbers. Every fact comes from an official source, cited and dated.
Entry requirements for South Korea
British citizens
You can visit South Korea without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism or short-term business, but you must have an onward or return ticket.1
Your passport must have an expiry date after the date you leave South Korea. You will be refused entry with a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.1
British nationals are temporarily exempt from the K-ETA electronic travel authorisation until 31 December 2026. If you choose to apply, use only the official K-ETA website: other sites offering applications are generally scams.12
Foreign nationals must hand in an arrival card on arrival. You can submit the e-Arrival card online, free of charge, within 72 hours (3 days) before arrival; paper forms are still available.1
The UK is a 'Quarantine Inspection Required Area': if anyone in the family has symptoms of illness on arrival, submit a Q-Code online or a paper health questionnaire.1
Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough; a birth or adoption certificate helps to show your relationship.3
You might be asked for that letter at a UK or foreign border. Single parents whose family name differs from the child's should also carry a divorce or marriage certificate.3
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK, Korea Tourism Organization. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
U.S. citizens
You need a valid U.S. passport. A visa is required for employment, teaching English and stays longer than 90 days.4
U.S. citizens are covered by the temporary K-ETA exemption, which the Korean government has extended to 31 December 2026. A K-ETA remains optional: with one, you skip the arrival card, but the application fee applies.52
If you overstay, apply for an extension from the Korea Immigration Service (KIS) before attempting to leave: exceeding your authorised stay may result in detention and fines.4
Exit permits are not generally required. However, if one parent requests a travel restriction on a child, the Korean authorities may stop that child from leaving, even when travelling with the other parent.6
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, Consulate of the Republic of Korea (Dallas), Korea Tourism Organization. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.
Health and insurance
No vaccinations are compulsory for South Korea. At least 8 weeks before you travel, check the latest vaccine advice for South Korea and talk to your doctor about your family's needs.78
Medical and dental care is usually of a good standard but can be expensive, and staff may not speak English. Make sure your travel insurance covers treatment and repatriation.8
U.S. travellers: Medicare does not apply overseas, and providers usually want payment before treatment or before discharge. The State Department strongly recommends supplemental insurance that covers medical evacuation.9
Korean customs allow small amounts of medicine for personal use in hand luggage. Keep it in its original packaging, with an English-language prescription from your doctor; local pharmacies require a prescription from a Korean doctor.89
Money and payments
The currency is the won. Credit cards are widely accepted, from large hotels and department stores to ordinary shops, but check before you buy, as some places do not take them.10
To change money, go to a bank or an authorised exchange office. Banks generally open from 09:00 to 16:00 on weekdays.10
Foreign currency worth more than 10,000 US dollars must be declared to customs on arrival. You must also declare any goods that may be prohibited or subject to duty.71
Plugs and electricity
The standard supply is 220 volts at 60 hertz, and sockets have two round holes. If you have no travel adapter, ask at your hotel's front desk; adapters are also sold at the airport, in duty-free shops and in convenience stores.11
Getting around and driving
UK licence holders need both the 1949 international driving permit and their UK licence in the car. You cannot buy an IDP outside the UK, so get one before you travel.12
U.S. licence holders also need an international driving permit. Drivers with a blood-alcohol level of 0.03% or more are legally drunk, and police run regular checkpoints.13
Traffic drives on the right. To hire a car you must be over 21, show your passport and pay by credit card in the driver's name.14
Most taxis run on the meter, do not expect tips and take cash, cards or transport cards. Drivers often speak little English, so carry your destination written in Korean.1512
Time difference and seasons
South Korea is 9 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 8 hours ahead during British Summer Time, as Korea does not change its clocks.161718
Korea has four distinct seasons: spring and autumn are clear and mild, summer is hot and humid, and winter is cold and dry. August is the hottest month and January the coldest.19
The summer rainy season usually falls in June and July, and the typhoon season normally runs from June to November. For sightseeing on foot, the Korea Tourism Organization suggests spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November).1219
Staying connected as a family
Free public Wi-Fi is available in most public places, such as airports, subway and train stations and some bus stops. Almost all trains also offer free Wi-Fi, although the connection may be unstable.1120
Google Maps navigation does not work in Korea. The Korea Tourism Organization points to local apps with English versions, such as Naver Map and Kakao Map: download them before you leave.14
Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, using the installation guide, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The networks used are listed under mobile networks.
The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a Korean number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.
Travelling with children
KTX and SRT high-speed trains have toilets, nursing rooms and baby-changing tables on board.20
Seat belts and car seats are mandatory, so book a suitable seat for each child if you hire a car.13
Air pollution, including yellow dust, is common, especially in spring. On high-pollution days, most residents stay indoors or wear face masks outside; keep children well hydrated.8
If a family member is admitted to hospital, staff may ask you to bring a guardian, or 'bohoja', to help with basic care such as washing and trips to the bathroom.8
Keep photos of every passport and permission letter on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.
The Korea Tourism Organization's travel hotline, 1330, helps in several languages including English, and can set up three-way calls with the emergency services from 7am to midnight.21
The government's Emergency Ready App, on iOS and Android, explains the alerts pushed to phones in Korea and provides English translations of emergency alerts.12
In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative abroad.21
The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.
Your questions
eSIM South Korea: frequently asked questions
Questions about the eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.
The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.
Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?
Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.
Do I keep my usual number?
Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.
What happens when my data runs out?
The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.
Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?
There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.
Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?
No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.
Questions about the trip
Do I need a visa to visit South Korea?
Not for a short holiday. British citizens can stay up to 90 days without a visa, with a return or onward ticket. U.S. citizens need a visa only for work, teaching English or stays longer than 90 days.
Do I need a K-ETA for South Korea in 2026?
No. British and U.S. citizens are temporarily exempt until 31 December 2026. If you apply anyway, use only the official K-ETA website.
How long must my passport be valid for South Korea?
For British tourists, the passport must expire after the date you leave South Korea. The U.S. State Department simply asks for a valid U.S. passport.
What is the e-Arrival card?
The online version of the arrival card every foreign visitor must hand in. It is free and can be submitted within 72 hours before arrival; paper forms remain available.
I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?
From the UK, a letter of permission from everyone else with parental responsibility, plus a birth or adoption certificate. Bring a marriage or divorce certificate if your family name differs from your child's.
Can a child be stopped from leaving South Korea?
Yes, in one case: if a parent has requested a travel restriction on the child, the Korean authorities may prevent departure, even when the child travels with the other parent.
Are any vaccinations compulsory for South Korea?
No. Check the latest health advice at least 8 weeks before you go and ask your doctor what your family needs.
Can I pay by card in South Korea?
Yes, in most businesses, from large hotels and department stores to ordinary shops, but some places do not accept cards, so check before you buy.
Do I need a plug adapter in South Korea?
Sockets have two round holes and supply 220 volts at 60 hertz. If you forget an adapter, your hotel's front desk may lend or sell you one.
Can I drive in South Korea with my licence?
With a UK licence, you also need the 1949 international driving permit, bought before you travel. U.S. drivers also need an international driving permit. Traffic drives on the right.
What is the time difference between the UK and South Korea?
Korea is 9 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 8 hours ahead during British Summer Time. Korea does not change its clocks.
When is the best time to visit South Korea with children?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are mild. Summer is hot and humid, with heavy rain usually in June and July.
Which numbers should I call in an emergency in South Korea?
119 for an ambulance or the fire service, 112 for the police. The 1330 travel hotline can help in English. Call from your usual line.
Is there free Wi-Fi in South Korea?
Yes, in most public places such as airports, subway and train stations, and on almost all trains, although the connection can be unstable.
