your internet connection goes out through another country (France, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, United States, Canada, or Norway). Websites and apps therefore see a foreign IP address, not a local one.

Practical guide

Planning a family trip to Portugal? Here is what to sort out before you go: passports and consent letters for children, healthcare cover, money, driving and emergency numbers. Every fact comes from an official source, cited and dated.

Entry requirements for Portugal

British citizens

Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the day you arrive, and must expire at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.1

No visa is needed for holidays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counting time in every Schengen country. At the border you may be asked for a return or onward ticket and proof that you have enough money for your stay.1

Under the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), you may have your fingerprints and photo taken at the border, free of charge. Children aged 11 or younger are not fingerprinted but may be photographed. Allow extra time on arrival and departure. ETIAS is not yet in operation.12

Children aged 17 and under travelling to Portugal alone, or with an adult who is not their parent or legal guardian, need a letter of authorisation signed and dated by a parent, with the signature certified by a notary or solicitor and then legalised, plus a copy of the parent's passport. Without it, entry may be delayed or refused.1

Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them is usually enough; a birth certificate, or a marriage or divorce certificate if your surname differs from your child's, also helps.3

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into the EU, but powdered baby milk and baby food are allowed.1

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK, travel-europe.europa.eu. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

U.S. citizens

U.S. citizens can visit Portugal for up to 90 days for tourism without a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your stay, and you need proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket.4

Travellers arriving without a valid passport are not allowed in and are sent back to their point of origin.5

Expect to be enrolled in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) on arrival and departure, with fingerprints and a facial image. ETIAS is not yet in operation.52

Children under 18 travelling with adults other than their parents or legal guardian need a letter of parental consent, signed, dated and notarized, giving the dates and reason for travel and details of the adult in charge.4

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, U.S. Embassy in Portugal, travel-europe.europa.eu. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.

Health and insurance

No vaccinations are compulsory to enter Portugal, including Madeira and the Azores. UK travellers: at least 8 weeks before the trip, check the latest vaccine information for Portugal.67

For medically necessary state healthcare, UK residents need a free GHIC or EHIC, and every family member needs their own card. It is no substitute for travel insurance: it does not cover private clinics or medical repatriation.78

U.S. travellers: Medicare does not apply overseas and private hospitals expect payment on admission. The State Department strongly recommends supplemental insurance covering medical evacuation.9

UK prescriptions are not recognised in Portugal. Bring enough medication for the whole trip in its original container, and keep a few days' supply in your hand luggage.7

Money and payments

The currency is the euro. Cash machines on the Multibanco (MB) and ATM networks work 24 hours a day; banks open from 8.30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.10

Service is included in restaurant bills, but a tip of about 5–10% is customary; in taxis, people usually round up.10

Arriving from outside the EU with 10,000 euros or more in cash? You must declare it to customs.11

Plugs and electricity

The supply is 230/400 volts at 50 hertz and sockets follow European standards. American-style flat-prong plugs need a 230-volt transformer and an adaptor.12

Getting around and driving

UK photocard licences are accepted; with an old paper licence you may also need the right international driving permit. A valid U.S. licence can be used for up to six months.1314

Traffic drives on the right. Limits: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on normal roads, 100 km/h on roads reserved for motor vehicles and 120 km/h on motorways. Driving with 0.5 grams of alcohol per litre or more is illegal, and police can fine you on the spot.1514

Seat belts are compulsory for everyone, and small children must travel in a child safety seat in the back. After an accident, leave the vehicle where it is and call the police straight away.14

Many motorways charge tolls and the system can be confusing: check how to pay before you drive. To rent a car you must be at least 21 to 25, depending on the company, and have held your licence for over a year.161315

Taxis are black with green roofs and use a meter; pushchairs and carry cots travel free. Alfa Pendular trains link Lisbon with the Algarve, Porto and Braga.17

Time zone and when to go

Mainland Portugal and Madeira keep the same time as the UK all year. The Azores are one hour behind the rest of Portugal.18

On the mainland, winters are mild, especially in the Algarve, and colder inland in the north and centre. Summers are hot and dry inland and slightly cooler on the coast; autumn often brings warm, sunny days.19

The Azores are mild all year round. In Madeira, average temperatures range from 19 ºC in winter to 24 ºC in summer, and the sea stays pleasant all year.19

Staying connected as a family

Mobile phones work throughout the country, with good nationwide coverage. The networks your eSIM uses are listed under Mobile networks.20

UK and U.S. residents live outside the European Union, so roaming charges may apply on your home mobile plan.20

Most accommodation, airports, restaurants, motorway service areas and shopping centres, as well as some public transport, offer free Wi-Fi.20

Install everyone's eSIM at home on Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online when you land. The installation guide takes a few minutes.

The Sirocco eSIM is data only: to make calls, use your usual number at your provider's rates.

Travelling with children

Lunch is usually served between 12:00 and 2:30 p.m. and dinner between 7:30 and 10:30 p.m., with a snack around 5 p.m. Most restaurants close one day a week.21

Always supervise children and keep small ones within arm's reach around pools and on the beach, even if they can swim. A red flag means no swimming; yellow means paddling at the water's edge only.13

Watch for signs warning of cliff erosion: falling rocks are a hazard, particularly in the Algarve.13

Hiking in Madeira and the Azores can be challenging: choose paths that suit the whole family's fitness and experience.13

Keep photos of everyone's passports and any consent letters on your phone: if something goes missing, it makes things much simpler.

Emergency numbers

Dial 112 for an ambulance, the fire service or the police; it is free from landlines and mobiles.2223

Feeling unwell but not an emergency? Call the health line on 808 24 24 24 on the mainland (press 9 for English), 800 24 24 20 in Madeira and Porto Santo, or 808 24 60 24 in the Azores.7

If a child goes missing, you can also call 116 000, the missing children hotline available in every EU country.23

U.S. citizens with an emergency can call the U.S. Embassy in Portugal on (+351) 21-727-3300.5

The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual mobile line.

Your questions

eSIM Portugal: frequently asked questions

Questions about the eSIM

Is my phone compatible?

On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.

Detailed iPhone and Android guide

When does my plan start?

The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.

Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?

Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.

What happens when my data runs out?

The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.

Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?

No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.

Questions about the trip

Do I need a visa to visit Portugal?

Not for a holiday. British citizens can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area, and U.S. citizens up to 90 days for tourism, without a visa.

How long must my passport be valid for Portugal?

On a British passport: issued less than 10 years before you arrive and valid for 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. On a U.S. passport: valid for at least three months beyond your stay.

Will my children be fingerprinted at the border?

Under the EU Entry/Exit System, children aged 11 or younger are not fingerprinted, though they may have their photo taken. Older children and adults may give both.

Do I need ETIAS to travel to Portugal?

Not yet. ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are being taken; the EU will announce the start date several months in advance.

My child is going to Portugal with their grandparents. What do they need?

Their own passport and a letter of authorisation from a parent, signed and dated, with the signature certified by a notary or solicitor. Without it, entry may be delayed or refused.

I'm travelling alone with my child. Do I need a letter?

Under UK law, you need permission from everyone else with parental responsibility; a letter from them is usually enough, and you might be asked for it at a UK or foreign border.

Can I bring baby milk and baby food into Portugal?

Yes. Meat and milk products cannot be taken into the EU, but powdered baby milk and baby food are among the exceptions.

Does each of us need a GHIC for Portugal?

Yes, every family member needs their own card for medically necessary state healthcare. Take out travel insurance as well, as the card does not cover medical repatriation.

Are any vaccinations required for Portugal?

No vaccination is compulsory to enter Portugal, Madeira or the Azores. UK travellers should check the latest vaccine information at least 8 weeks before the trip.

What plugs and voltage does Portugal use?

Sockets follow European standards at 230/400 volts. American flat-prong plugs need an adaptor and a 230-volt transformer.

Can I drive in Portugal on my UK or U.S. licence?

Yes. UK photocard licences are accepted, and a valid U.S. licence can be used for up to six months. Traffic drives on the right.

Is Portugal on the same time as the UK?

Yes, mainland Portugal and Madeira match UK time all year. The Azores are one hour behind.

What is the emergency number in Portugal?

112, for an ambulance, the fire service or the police. Call from your usual mobile line, as the Sirocco eSIM is data only.
