Practical guide

Planning a family trip to Indonesia? Passports in perfect condition, a visa on arrival and an online arrival card come first. Here is what to sort out for adults and children, with every fact taken from an official source, cited and dated.

Entry requirements for Indonesia

British citizens

Your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive and at least 2 blank pages. A passport that has been reported lost or stolen will be refused.1

You need a visa. For tourism or visiting family, most main airports and seaports issue a 30-day visa on arrival: it costs 500,000 Indonesian rupiah, payable by cash or card, is valid for a single entry, and you must show proof of an onward or return journey.1

You can also apply online on the Indonesian immigration website at least one week before you leave; make sure the visa is approved before you arrive.1

The 30-day visa can be extended once, for another 30 days, at any immigration office. Do it within the first 30 days: overstaying costs 1 million rupiah a day.1

Within 72 hours of arrival, complete the online customs and health declaration on the All Indonesia arrival card website or app. It is free: ignore websites or emails that ask for payment.1

Bali charges all foreign tourists arriving on the island a levy of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah, payable online or on arrival.1

If you stay in private accommodation, register with the local police at the nearest police station; hotels register you automatically.1

Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them is usually enough, and a birth or adoption certificate helps to show your relationship.2

You might be asked for that letter at a UK or foreign border. Single parents whose family name differs from the child's should also carry a divorce or marriage certificate.2

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

U.S. citizens

U.S. passports must have at least two blank pages and be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, or you will be denied entry. Avoid travelling with a damaged passport.3

If you arrive at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta or Bali's Ngurah Rai airport, you may apply in advance for an electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA). You need a return or onward flight booking and a fee of 500,000 rupiah; it is valid for 30 days and can be extended once for another 30 days.3

Overstaying costs 1 million rupiah per day. Always carry a copy of your passport and proof of visa, and leave with the same passport you used to enter.3

Each child needs their own U.S. passport, which is also required to fly back into the United States.45

If a child is travelling with only one parent, carry a letter of consent from the other parent, preferably in English and notarized. If the child travels with a guardian or alone, both parents should sign it.4

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, USAGov, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.

Health and insurance

The only vaccine requirement is a yellow fever certificate, for travellers coming from a country listed as a transmission risk.16

UK travellers should check the latest vaccine advice at least 8 weeks before the trip; U.S. travellers should be up to date on all vaccinations the CDC advises. Ask your doctor or nurse.78

Good medical care can be expensive, and medical evacuation can cost tens of thousands of pounds. Make sure your insurance covers treatment and repatriation.7

U.S. travellers: Medicare and Medicaid do not apply overseas, and hospitals often require payment or sizable deposits before providing care. The State Department strongly recommends supplemental insurance covering medical evacuation.8

Carry prescription medicine in its original packaging with your doctor's prescription: the rules on some medicines differ from those at home.87

Money and payments

The currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR, written Rp), and by law all transactions must be made in rupiah.9

Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, large restaurants and large stores, Visa and Mastercard most of all. ATMs on the international networks are common in major cities and tourist destinations.910

Carry enough cash for small towns, remote areas and markets, and withdraw it in a major city before you set off.109

Cash above one hundred million rupiah, or the equivalent in another currency, must be declared to Indonesian Customs.10

Plugs and electricity

The standard voltage is 230 V at 50 Hz, and most sockets are type C and F, the standard European two-pin design. UK and U.S. plugs need a travel adaptor.11

UK devices charge as normal. The voltage range in the United States is different, so the Ministry of Tourism suggests U.S. travellers consider a voltage converter.11

Hotels and airports have sockets you can use for free, and trains have a plug in every class.11

Getting around and driving

You cannot drive on your UK licence: you need an International Driving Permit issued by the UK.12

Traffic drives on the left. With children, a car with a driver is often simpler: GOV.UK suggests employing a private driver or hiring a car with a driver.612

If you ride a moped or motorbike, wear a helmet in good condition. After an accident, wait for the police at the scene.12

Life jackets suitable for children are not always available on boats and ferries, so you may need to bring your own.12

Time difference and seasons

Indonesia has three time zones. In the UK winter, Sumatra and Java (including Jakarta) are 7 hours ahead, Bali 8 hours and eastern Indonesia 9 hours; subtract one hour during British Summer Time. For U.S. travellers, the gap depends on your home time zone.13146

Bali, Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara are on Central Indonesia Time, one hour ahead of Jakarta.13

The climate is tropical, averaging 28 °C on the coastal plains with 70 to 90% humidity. In most of the country, including Java and Bali, the dry season runs from April to October and the wet season from November to March.15

Seasons have become less predictable, and GOV.UK notes that the wet season in eastern Indonesia usually runs from April to August.1512

Staying connected as a family

Mobile coverage is good, especially in cities, and keeps expanding, according to the Italian foreign ministry. The networks your eSIM uses are listed in the mobile networks section.6

Most international airports have Wi-Fi and most major hotels offer it free to guests. Public hotspots in malls, cafés and attractions are common in big cities but not always secure.16

Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The installation guide takes a few minutes.

Before a day trip to a volcano or a remote island, download offline maps and tickets at the hotel.

The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a local number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.

Travelling with children

There are many street dogs in Bali and monkeys around temples and tourist areas. Teach children to keep their distance, and seek medical help immediately after any bite or scratch.7

Tap water is not safe to drink. Ask for bottled water in restaurants, and remember that ice may be made with tap water.78

Air quality in major cities can reach unhealthy levels, and infants, children and teens are among those most at risk from particle pollution.78

On Nyepi, Bali's day of silence, going out in public is forbidden: check the date if your stay falls around it.17

Keep photos of every passport, visa and consent letter on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.

Emergency numbers

Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism lists: police and general emergencies 110, or 112 from mobile and satellite phones; ambulance 118 or 119; fire 113.18

GOV.UK lists ambulance 118, fire 112 and police 110; the U.S. State Department gives 118 or 119 for medical emergencies.198

In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative abroad.19

The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.

Your questions

eSIM Indonesia: frequently asked questions

Questions about the eSIM

Is my phone compatible?

On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.

Detailed iPhone and Android guide

When does my plan start?

The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.

Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?

Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.

What happens when my data runs out?

The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.

Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?

No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.

Questions about the trip

Do I need a visa for Indonesia?

Yes. British and U.S. citizens can get a 30-day visa on arrival for 500,000 rupiah, extendable once for another 30 days. You can also apply online before you travel.

How long must my passport be valid for Indonesia?

At least 6 months after the date you arrive, with at least 2 blank pages. A damaged passport, or one reported lost or stolen, can lead to refusal of entry.

What is the All Indonesia arrival card?

An online customs and health declaration to complete on the All Indonesia website or app within 72 hours of arrival. It is free of charge.

How much is the Bali tourist levy?

150,000 Indonesian rupiah per person for foreign tourists arriving in Bali. You can pay online before you go or on arrival.

I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?

From the UK, a letter of permission from everyone else with parental responsibility, plus a birth or adoption certificate. U.S. parents should carry a consent letter from the other parent, preferably notarized.

Are any vaccinations compulsory for Indonesia?

Only a yellow fever certificate, if you are coming from a country listed as a transmission risk. Speak to your doctor about anything else well before you go.

Can I pay by card in Indonesia?

Yes, in hotels, large restaurants and large stores, and ATMs are common in major cities. Carry cash for markets, small towns and remote areas.

Do I need a plug adaptor in Indonesia?

Yes, for UK and U.S. plugs: most sockets are type C and F, the European two-pin design, at 230 V. U.S. travellers may also need a voltage converter.

Can I drive in Indonesia on my UK licence?

Not on its own: you need an International Driving Permit issued by the UK. Traffic drives on the left, and many visitors hire a car with a driver instead.

What is the time difference with Indonesia?

It depends on the island. In the UK winter, Java is 7 hours ahead, Bali 8 and eastern Indonesia 9; one hour less during British Summer Time.

When is the rainy season in Indonesia?

In most of the country, including Java and Bali, from November to March; the dry season runs from April to October. Eastern Indonesia can differ.

Which numbers should I call in an emergency in Indonesia?

110 or 112 for the police and general emergencies, 118 or 119 for an ambulance, 113 for the fire service. Call from your usual line.
