Practical guide

Greece is an easy family holiday, but a few details matter: passport dates, border checks, ferries and plugs. Here is what to check before you fly, with every fact taken from an official source, cited and dated.

Entry requirements for Greece

British citizens

Greece follows Schengen rules. Each passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the date you arrive, and must expire at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.1

You can visit without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, as a tourist or to see family. Days spent in other Schengen countries in the previous 180 days count towards the 90. You may be asked for a return ticket and proof of enough money for your stay.1

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is replacing passport stamps, but the Greek authorities have indicated they will not take fingerprints or photos from UK travellers; follow officials' advice on the ground. ETIAS is not yet in operation.12

Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough; a birth or adoption certificate helps to show your relationship.3

You might be asked for that letter at a UK or foreign border. Single parents whose family name differs from the child's should also carry a divorce or marriage certificate.3

Always carry your passport during your stay: the police may ask for identification and may not accept a copy.4

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

U.S. citizens

Greece is part of the Schengen area: U.S. citizens may enter without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism.5

Greek law requires three months of passport validity beyond your departure date, but the State Department recommends at least six months. A passport ever reported lost or stolen will be refused.5

Carry proof of sufficient funds, which credit cards often meet, and a return ticket. Keep your passport or another photo ID with you at all times.56

On your first entry under the EU Entry/Exit System, officers take a photo of your face and/or scan your fingerprints, and passports are no longer stamped. ETIAS is not yet in operation.72

If your child travels with only one parent, carry a letter of consent from the other parent, preferably in English and notarised. A parent with sole custody should carry a copy of the custody document.8

Children need their own U.S. passport, and every U.S. citizen needs a passport book to fly back into the United States.89

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, USAGov. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.

Health and insurance

No vaccinations are compulsory for entering Greece. At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest vaccine advice for Greece and speak to your doctor.1011

UK travellers: for medically necessary state healthcare you need a GHIC or EHIC. The UK GHIC is free and each family member needs their own. It is not an alternative to travel insurance and does not cover private clinics or medical repatriation.1112

U.S. travellers: Medicare is not accepted overseas, and private hospitals usually require proof of insurance or cash before admission. The State Department strongly recommends travel insurance covering medical evacuation.13

Treatment is generally good on the mainland but may be limited on the islands, some of which have serious shortages of ambulances.11

Bring prescription medicines in their original containers with the prescription label, and a doctor's letter stating the quantity you need. Greek law allows up to 5 different medicines for personal use, with no more than 2 packs of each.1114

Money and payments

The currency is the euro. Major credit cards are accepted and cash machines are common, especially in the main cities, but some places on small islands have no card reader.151617

By law, restaurants must give you an itemised bill. A passport is required to exchange currency.415

Declare cash worth 10,000 euros or more on arrival and keep a certified copy of the declaration, or the money could be seized when you leave.1

Plugs and electricity

The supply is 230 volts AC at 50 Hz, and sockets are type F. British appliances need an adaptor; appliances from North America need a transformer.1815

On Santorini and some smaller islands, there may be sudden power cuts.16

Getting around and driving

UK licence holders can drive on a UK photocard licence; with an old paper licence you may also need the 1968 international driving permit. Hire companies often ask for more, such as an IDP. Provisional licences are not valid in Greece.4

U.S. licence holders: Greek law requires both your U.S. licence and an international driving permit, even if the rental company does not ask for it. Get the IDP in the United States before you travel.19

Traffic drives on the right. Children must use appropriate child restraints, and helmets are compulsory on mopeds and quad bikes. To hire a moped you need at least category A1 on your licence.204

The ferry network is extensive, but bad weather and strong winds can cause cancellations or long delays, and rough seas can bring on seasickness, especially on fast ferries. From Athens, island ferries mainly leave from Piraeus and Rafina.1721

On buses and trains, validate your ticket on the turnstile pad before boarding: without a valid ticket you could be fined up to 60 times the basic fare.19

Time difference and climate

Greece is 2 hours ahead of the UK all year round.21

The climate is Mediterranean, with long sunshine, mild temperatures and little rain. Hot, dry summer days are often cooled by the etesian winds; winters are mild in the plains, while the mountains are usually covered with snow.15

Summer heatwaves often bring temperatures above 40°C. Take particular care with babies and young children, and avoid the sun and exertion in the midday heat.10

Staying connected as a family

Telecommunications in Greece are generally good. Greece's tourism organisation suggests checking with your phone company before you travel that your mobile will work there.2118

Set every phone to allow emergency alerts (on an iPhone: Settings, Notifications, Emergency Alerts) so the Greek government's alerts reach you.4

On ferries, the mobile service may come from a satellite system, billed outside the EU roaming rules with no price cap. The EU advises switching off roaming or using flight mode on board.22

Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi with the installation guide, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The networks your eSIM uses are listed under mobile networks.

The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a local number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.

Travelling with children

At pools and beaches, always supervise children and keep small ones within arm's reach, even if they can swim. Do not dive into unknown water, and stay out when a red flag is flying.4

You cannot bring meat, milk or products containing them into the EU, but powdered baby milk and baby food are exceptions.1

Tap water is generally drinkable, except in remote areas and on some islands. Pharmacies work on a rota, and most close on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and at weekends; dial 1434 for duty hospitals and pharmacies.2316

Public hospitals often have minimal nursing staff overnight and at weekends; the State Department suggests family stay with a patient, especially a child.13

Keep photos of every passport and permission letter on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.

Emergency numbers

Dial 112 for an ambulance, the fire service or the police. Calling 999 from a UK mobile in Greece transfers you automatically to the Greek emergency services.24

Direct numbers: ambulance 166, police 100, fire 199, tourist police 1571.15

If a child goes missing, you can also call 116 000, the missing children hotline available in every EU country.25

In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative in Greece.24

The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.

Your questions

eSIM Greece: frequently asked questions

Questions about the eSIM

Is my phone compatible?

On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.

Detailed iPhone and Android guide

When does my plan start?

The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.

Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?

Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.

What happens when my data runs out?

The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.

Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?

No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.

Questions about the trip

Do I need a visa to visit Greece?

Not for a holiday. British citizens can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area, and U.S. citizens up to 90 days for tourism.

How long must our passports be valid for Greece?

British passports must be less than 10 years old on arrival and valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. For U.S. passports, Greek law requires three months beyond departure; the State Department recommends six.

Will we be fingerprinted at the Greek border?

The Greek authorities have indicated that they will not collect fingerprints and photos from UK travellers under the EES. U.S. visitors may be photographed and/or fingerprinted on their first entry; children aged 11 or younger are not fingerprinted.

Do I need ETIAS to travel to Greece?

Not yet. ETIAS is currently not in operation and no applications are being collected. The EU will announce the start date several months in advance.

I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?

From the UK, a letter of permission from everyone else with parental responsibility, plus a birth or adoption certificate. From the U.S., a consent letter from the other parent, preferably in English and notarised, or the custody document if you have sole custody.

Are any vaccinations required for Greece?

No vaccinations are compulsory for entering Greece. Check the whole family's vaccinations are up to date and ask your doctor at least 8 weeks before you go.

Can I use my GHIC in Greece?

Yes, for medically necessary state healthcare. Each family member needs their own card, and it does not replace travel insurance: it will not pay for private clinics or repatriation to the UK.

Can I drive in Greece with my licence?

A UK photocard licence is accepted; paper licence holders may also need the 1968 international driving permit. U.S. drivers must carry both their licence and an IDP under Greek law.

What plug adapter do I need for Greece?

Greek sockets are type F, at 230 volts and 50 Hz. British appliances need an adaptor, and appliances from North America need a transformer.

What is the time difference between the UK and Greece?

Greece is 2 hours ahead of the UK, in winter and in summer.

What number should I call in an emergency in Greece?

Dial 112 for an ambulance, the fire service or the police; 166 also reaches an ambulance. Call from your usual line: the Sirocco eSIM is for data only.

Can I bring baby formula and baby food into Greece?

Yes. Meat and milk products cannot be brought into the EU, but powdered baby milk and baby food are listed as exceptions.
