Practical guide

Every traveller to Egypt, children included, needs a visa or an entry stamp. Here is what to sort out before you fly, from documents and money to health, transport and emergency numbers, with every fact taken from an official source.

Entry requirements for Egypt

British citizens

Each passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive and at least one blank page. You will be refused entry without a valid travel document.1

British passport holders normally need a visa. Apply online in advance to avoid delays (tourist e-visas last up to 3 months), through the Egyptian Consulate General in the UK, or buy one on arrival, valid for up to 30 days and payable in cash.1

Since 1 August 2026, Cairo International Airport also sells digital visas on arrival, by card only, at self-service machines or via the Visa on Arrival portal. There is no need to buy a visa from an agent.1

Flying into Sharm El-Sheikh for under 15 days at the resorts of Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba? A free entry stamp replaces the visa. Travelling outside the resorts or staying longer requires a visa.1

Extensions are handled by the Egyptian Passport and Immigration Offices. Leaving on an expired visa can cause difficulties, including a fine if it expired over 14 days earlier.1

Under UK law, everyone with parental responsibility must agree before a child goes abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough; a birth or adoption certificate helps show your relationship.2

You might be asked for that letter at a border. Single parents whose family name differs from the child's should also carry a divorce or marriage certificate. Note that Egyptian family law, especially on child custody, is very different from UK law.23

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

U.S. citizens

U.S. citizens must have a visa: apply for an e-visa on the Egyptian government's website, the only official source, or get a renewable single-entry 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Egyptian airports, paid in cash in U.S. dollars.4

For an e-visa, the Egyptian Ministry of Interior's portal asks for a passport valid for at least 6 months from the arrival date, and the application must be made at least 7 days before departure.56

Officials check your entry visa stamp when you leave. If you stay after your visa expires, you may have to pay a fine at the airport, so arrive early with enough Egyptian currency.4

A U.S. citizen leaving Egypt with a U.S.-Egyptian dual-national child may need to show proof of consent from the non-travelling Egyptian parent at the airport.4

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, Egypt e-Visa Portal (Ministry of Interior). Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.

Health and insurance

Vaccination certificates depend on where you arrive from: you need proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are coming from a country listed as a transmission risk, and proof of polio vaccination if you arrive from certain countries such as Kenya or Syria.147

At least 8 weeks before the trip, check the latest vaccine advice for Egypt and talk to your doctor. Make sure your travel insurance covers local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation.8

U.S. travellers: Medicare and Medicaid do not work abroad, and hospitals often want payment up front, usually in cash. Supplemental insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended.9

Some prescribed and over-the-counter medicines are controlled in Egypt and may need prior permission from the Ministry of Health. Keep medicines in their original packaging, with a doctor's letter stating the condition, the amount and that they are for personal use.84

Money and payments

The currency is the Egyptian pound. Cards are accepted in the major cities and tourist destinations, but Egypt is still largely cash-based, especially for taxis and small shops, so always carry some Egyptian cash.10

Exchange offices are found in most major hotels, tourist sites and airports, and bank cash machines are available around the clock.10

You can take up to 5,000 Egyptian pounds in or out. GOV.UK says foreign currency over 10,000 US dollars must be declared on arrival, with no upper limit; the State Department says carrying more than that is illegal.111

Getting around and driving

UK licence holders need both the 1949 international driving permit and their UK licence in the car, for up to 6 months. You cannot buy the permit outside the UK, so get it before you travel.3

Traffic drives on the right, and drivers and front-seat passengers must wear seatbelts. Do not drive outside the main cities and resorts at night; the State Department suggests taxis or hired drivers instead of driving yourself.12313

Taxis must by law have a working meter: check it is switched on when the ride starts. Ride-hailing apps are widely used in Cairo and Alexandria, and a domestic flight of about 60 minutes reaches most places.10

Climate: when to go

According to Egypt's tourism authority, the mild winter runs from November to March and the hot, dry summer from May to September. In winter, the Red Sea, Luxor and Aswan stay warm and sunny.10

July is the hottest month, with highs above 40 degrees; January, the coolest, ranges from 8 to 18 degrees.12

Staying connected as a family

Mobile phone coverage is widespread and works well, although some parts of the country have no signal; most hotels offer guests free Wi-Fi. The networks your eSIM uses are listed in the mobile networks section.121410

Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi with the installation guide, so the whole family is online as soon as you land.

Before a Nile cruise or a desert trip, download offline maps and tickets at the hotel.

The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a local number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.

Travelling with children

Tap water is not safe to drink in many areas: stick to bottled water, ask for it in restaurants, and remember that ice may be made from tap water. Freshly cooked food in hotels, on Nile cruises and in popular restaurants is generally safe.9

The Red Sea and Mediterranean beaches are generally clean, but keep children out of the Nile and its canals and away from stagnant water, which carry a risk of bilharzia.9

Arms and legs must be covered in mosques, churches and synagogues, so pack a scarf or light cardigan. During Ramadan, check opening hours of shops and restaurants.103

Emergency numbers

Ambulance: 123. Fire: 180. Police: 122. Tourist police: 126.15

In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative abroad.15

The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.

Your questions

eSIM Egypt: frequently asked questions

Questions about the eSIM

Is my phone compatible?

On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.

Detailed iPhone and Android guide

When does my plan start?

The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.

Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?

Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.

What happens when my data runs out?

The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.

Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?

No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.

Questions about the trip

Do I need a visa for Egypt?

Yes, apart from short resort stays in Sharm El-Sheikh. You can get one online in advance, through an Egyptian consulate or on arrival, and each child needs one too.

Is it better to get an e-visa or a visa on arrival?

GOV.UK says an e-visa obtained in advance can help to prevent delays. Visas on arrival are sold for cash at airport kiosks before immigration; Cairo also sells digital visas by card.

Do we need a visa for a beach holiday in Sharm El-Sheikh?

Not if you fly in and stay less than 15 days at the resorts of Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba: you get a free entry stamp. Leaving the resorts requires a visa.

I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?

From the UK, a letter of permission from everyone else with parental responsibility, plus a birth or adoption certificate. Bring a marriage or divorce certificate if your family name differs from your child's.

My children are also Egyptian citizens: is there anything to know?

The U.S. State Department says you may need proof of consent from the non-travelling Egyptian parent at the airport. GOV.UK notes that Egyptian custody law is very different from UK law.

Are any vaccinations compulsory for Egypt?

Only depending on where you arrive from: yellow fever if you come from a transmission-risk country, polio from certain countries such as Kenya or Syria. Check the latest vaccine advice with your doctor at least 8 weeks before travelling.

Can I drive in Egypt with my UK licence?

Yes, for up to 6 months, together with the 1949 international driving permit, which you must get before leaving the UK. Traffic drives on the right.

Which numbers should I call in an emergency in Egypt?

123 for an ambulance, 180 for the fire service, 122 for the police and 126 for the tourist police. Call from your usual line.

When is the best time to visit Egypt with children?

The mild winter, from November to March, when the Red Sea, Luxor and Aswan stay warm and sunny. Summer, from May to September, is hot and dry, with July highs above 40 degrees.

Is there mobile coverage and Wi-Fi across Egypt?

Mobile coverage is widespread and works well, though some areas have no signal. Most hotels offer guests free Wi-Fi.
