Practical guide
Planning a family trip to the Dominican Republic? Here is what to sort out before you fly: the e-ticket, documents for adults and children, money, plugs, driving and emergency numbers, each fact from an official source, cited and dated.
Entry requirements for the Dominican Republic
British citizens
Until 31 December 2026, British passport holders can enter and leave for tourism as long as the passport stays valid for the whole visit. Rules may change after that date; the Ministry of Tourism's general rule is at least six months' validity.12
You will be refused entry with a passport reported lost or stolen, and may be refused without proof of onward or return travel. Border officials take fingerprints and a photograph on arrival.1
Everyone must complete the free entry and exit form (e-ticket), which includes the customs declaration. You get a QR code that you may be asked to show at check-in, on arrival and when you leave.12
GOV.UK says the form can be filled in up to 7 days before arrival; the Ministry of Tourism says as soon as you have your flight details. One person can register the whole family, up to 7 people per form, with a single QR code; children skip the customs section.12
You can visit for tourism without a visa for 30 days, and pay to extend your stay up to 120 days through the Dominican Republic Immigration Service.1
For a foreign child, the Ministry of Tourism says only a passport is required, with exceptions if a parent lives in the Dominican Republic. For children aged 17 and under travelling alone, check the rules with the airline and the Immigration Service.31
Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough; you might be asked for it at the border.4
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK, Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
U.S. citizens
U.S. citizens need a visa only for visits longer than 30 days. The tourist card is included in airline charges and allows stays of up to 30 days, extendable through the Migration Department in Santo Domingo.5
Complete an eTicket for each entry and each exit. On arrival you need a round-trip ticket, enough funds for your stay and the address where you are staying.5
Until 31 December 2026, the Ministry of Tourism lets U.S. nationals on holiday enter with a passport that stays valid during their stay and departure.2
If you stay beyond 30 days without an extension, a fine is charged on departure.5
Children under 18 who are Dominican citizens or legal residents, including dual citizens, need written permission from both parents or legal guardians to leave the country.5
A child travelling with only one parent may need a letter of consent from the other parent, preferably in English and notarised.6
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, USAGov. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.
Health and insurance
No vaccinations are compulsory, according to the Spanish and Italian foreign ministries. A yellow fever certificate is required for travellers arriving from Brazil and other high-risk countries.7851
See a doctor in good time: GOV.UK suggests checking vaccinations and certificates at least 8 weeks before the trip, the State Department at least one month before.19
Get travel insurance that covers local treatment and medical evacuation. Private hospitals expect advance payment or proof of insurance, and visitors who cannot pay have sometimes been stopped from leaving the country until the bill is settled.109
U.S. travellers: Medicare and Medicaid do not work overseas, and the State Department strongly recommends supplemental insurance covering medical evacuation.9
Carry prescription medicine in its original labelled packaging, with a copy of the prescription.9
Money and payments
The currency is the Dominican peso (RD$). US dollars and euros are easily exchanged at banks and authorised exchange offices, and some offices also take pounds sterling.11
Cash machines are widely available and give the best rates: choose one indoors and use it in daylight. Tourist businesses often take US dollars, but at a less favourable rate than banks.113
Restaurant bills automatically include a 10% service charge on top of the 18% sales tax (ITBIS).11
Plugs and electricity
The supply is 110 volts. Visitors from the US and Canada can plug in directly; travellers from Europe need adapters and converters. Large resorts keep a few at the front desk, but bring your own.11
Outside the big resorts, which have generators, power cuts and surges can be frequent: protect your devices.11
Getting around and driving
You can drive on a UK photocard licence for up to 3 months; with an old paper licence you may need to update it or carry the correct international driving permit. Hire companies may also ask for an IDP and a year's driving experience.12
For other foreign licences, including U.S. ones, the Ministry of Tourism says they are valid only for your legal stay: the 30-day tourist card period.3
Avoid driving outside the main cities at night, because of poor lighting, animals and pedestrians on the road. Seat belts are compulsory for car passengers.121113
Use an authorised airport or hotel taxi or a registered provider; ride-hailing apps are widely available. Private companies run good coach services between cities. Motorbike taxis often carry no helmet for passengers.12
Time difference and climate
The Dominican Republic is four hours behind the UK in winter and five hours behind during British Summer Time.8
The climate is tropical and warm all year. December to early March is the most pleasant time, with daytime temperatures of 25 to 27°C. Summer is the hottest and wettest season, with humidity at its peak from April to October and short rainstorms.811
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and September is usually the most active month. The sea can be dangerous during this period.1112
Staying connected as a family
A GSM phone works in the Dominican Republic. Wi-Fi is found in cafés, restaurants, large bus stations and hotel lobbies, though not always fast or reliable. The networks your eSIM uses are listed under mobile networks.311
You can print the e-ticket QR codes or keep a screenshot: have them ready at the airline counter, where they are checked.2
Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi with the installation guide, so the whole family is online as soon as you land.
The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a local number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.
Travelling with children
Tap water is not drinkable, and should not be swallowed in the shower either: give children bottled water, and ask for drinks without ice.119
Lifeguards may not be present at pools or on beaches, and safety and rescue equipment may not be available.12
There is no child car seat law, according to the State Department, while the Italian foreign ministry says children under 8 may not sit in the front.138
The sun is strong even on cloudy days. Pack your usual sun cream, hats and insect repellent, as the choice locally is limited.11
Book a child car seat with your hire car or transfer in advance, and keep photos of every passport and consent letter on your phone.
Emergency numbers
Dial 911 for an ambulance, the fire service or the police.14
911 does not cover the whole country. Outside Santo Domingo, GOV.UK gives the tourist police on +1 809 200 3500; the State Department lists POLITUR on 809-222-2026.149
In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative abroad.14
The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.
On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.
The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.
Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?
Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.
Do I keep my usual number?
Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.
What happens when my data runs out?
The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.
Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?
There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.
Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?
No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.
Questions about the trip
Do I need a visa for the Dominican Republic?
Not for a holiday of up to 30 days. British citizens can pay to extend to 120 days; U.S. citizens need a visa only for visits longer than 30 days.
How long must my passport be valid?
Until 31 December 2026, British and U.S. tourists only need a passport valid for the whole stay and departure. The Ministry of Tourism's general rule is at least six months.
What is the Dominican e-ticket?
A free online entry and exit form, including the customs declaration, that every traveller must complete. It produces a QR code checked at check-in and at the border.
Does each child need their own e-ticket?
No. One person fills in the form for the whole family, up to 7 people per form, and a single QR code is issued. Children do not complete the customs section.
I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?
Their passports and a letter of consent from the other parent. UK law requires the permission of everyone with parental responsibility; the U.S. government prefers a notarised letter in English.
Our children are also Dominican citizens: does anything change?
Yes. Minors who are Dominican citizens, including dual citizens, need written permission from both parents or legal guardians to leave the Dominican Republic.
Are any vaccinations compulsory?
No, except a yellow fever certificate for travellers from Brazil and other high-risk countries. See your doctor or a travel clinic well before the trip.
Should I take dollars, euros or pounds?
Dollars and euros exchange easily at banks and authorised offices; some offices also take pounds. Cash machines give the best rate for pesos.
Do I need a plug adaptor?
From the UK and Europe, yes: bring adapters and converters for the 110-volt supply. U.S. and Canadian devices plug in directly.
Can I drive with my licence?
A UK photocard licence is valid for up to 3 months. For other foreign licences, the Ministry of Tourism says they are valid for your legal stay of 30 days. Avoid driving at night.
Which number should I call in an emergency?
911 for an ambulance, the fire service or the police. Outside Santo Domingo, where 911 does not reach everywhere, call the tourist police on +1 809 200 3500.
When is the hurricane season?
From 1 June to 30 November, with September usually the most active month. December to early March has the most pleasant weather.
What is the time difference with the UK?
The Dominican Republic is four hours behind the UK in winter and five hours behind during British Summer Time.
