Practical guide

Planning a family trip to Costa Rica? Here is what to sort out before you fly: entry documents for adults and children, money, driving, seasons and emergency numbers. Every fact comes from an official source, cited and dated.

Entry requirements for Costa Rica

British citizens

Your passport must be valid for at least 1 day after the day you plan to leave Costa Rica. Using a passport reported lost or stolen will lead to refusal of entry.1

British citizens can visit without a visa for up to 180 days. The immigration officer decides the exact period on arrival; overstaying can mean a fine of 100 US dollars per month and refusal of future entry.1

Costa Rica's tourism board says the immigration official will ask to see a return ticket on arrival, and visitors must be able to prove means of at least 100 US dollars per month of stay. Keep a photocopy of each passport with its entry stamp: the police usually accept a printed copy.23

Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough, and you might be asked for it at a UK or foreign border.4

A birth or adoption certificate helps to show your relationship with the child. Single parents whose family name differs from the child's should also carry a divorce or marriage certificate.4

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK, Instituto Costarricense de Turismo. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

U.S. citizens

You need a passport valid for the whole stay and a return or onward ticket. Immigration may refuse entry if a passport is damaged.5

Visitors may be allowed to stay up to 180 days without a visa. Leave by the date you are given: overstaying can lead to fines, delays, deportation and refusal of future entry.5

Always carry copies of your ID and immigration papers. Unpaid bills, including medical costs or car accident bills, can stop you from leaving the country.5

A child travelling alone or with only one parent may need a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized. With one parent, the letter comes from the other parent; with a guardian or alone, both parents sign.6

Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.

Health and insurance

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you arrive from a country listed as a transmission risk, including some countries in South America and Africa. The tourism board adds that the vaccine must be given at least 10 days before the trip.178

For other health advice, UK travellers can check TravelHealthPro's Costa Rica guide. Whatever your nationality, see your doctor or a travel clinic well before departure.19

Only initial emergency treatment is free for visitors; anything after that is charged. Private hospitals usually want payment or proof of insurance first, and Medicare and Medicaid do not work overseas. Take insurance that covers treatment, repatriation and medical evacuation.107

UK prescriptions cannot be used locally. Bring enough medicine for the whole trip, in its original packaging, with a copy of the prescription.107

Money and payments

The currency is the colón, but U.S. dollars and major credit cards are widely accepted. Exchange money only at banks and approved exchange offices.8

Cash machines are found throughout the country, though some close from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Bank transactions require the original passport, not a copy.8

In restaurants and hotels, 13% VAT and a 10% tip are already included in the final price. The departure tax of 29 US dollars is usually included in air fares.81

Declare cash or goods worth 10,000 US dollars or more on arrival, or they could be seized when you leave.1

Plugs and electricity

Sockets are 110 V and take standard US two-pin plugs. UK travellers need an adapter and chargers that accept 110 V; plugs from the United States fit as they are.8

Getting around and driving

A UK photocard licence is valid for up to 180 days, depending on the stay granted on arrival; with an old paper licence, you may need an international driving permit. U.S. travellers need their passport and a U.S. licence or an international driving permit.311

Private cars may only enter San José on certain weekdays, depending on the last digit of the number plate; your hire company can explain. Roads to beaches and rural areas may be unpaved, sometimes only passable by four-wheel drive, and landslides can block roads in the rainy season. Avoid driving outside towns at night.311

After an accident with injuries or a dispute, do not move the car until the traffic police arrive. Call the traffic police (2222 9330 or 2222 9245) and the INS insurance investigator (800 800 8000) straight away.3

Use official taxis only: red, or orange at the airport, with a triangular sticker and a roof sign showing the company. Check that the driver's ID is on the dashboard and that the meter is running.3

Time difference and seasons

Costa Rica is 6 hours behind the UK in winter and 7 hours behind in summer.12

On the Pacific side, the dry season runs from December to March, with April as a transition month. The rainy season lasts from May to October, with most rain in the afternoon and early evening.13

The Caribbean side has no well-defined dry season; its driest spells are February to March and September to October. The hurricane season usually runs from June to November, which is also the peak rainy season.133

Staying connected as a family

Portugal's foreign ministry describes the phone network as good, with modern mobile technology. The networks your eSIM uses are listed in the mobile networks section.14

Costa Rica's tourism board recommends driving with a GPS or navigation app, and so with a local SIM or an international data plan.8

Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The installation guide takes a few minutes.

Before a day in the rainforest or on a remote beach, download offline maps and tickets at the hotel.

The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a local number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.

Travelling with children

Children born in Costa Rica are Costa Rican citizens, and every Costa Rican minor needs an exit permit from immigration to leave the country. The rule may also apply to resident children of other nationalities and is strictly enforced: parents should check with Costa Rican immigration before travelling.5

Activities: zip lines are open to children from age 6 who weigh at least 22 kg (48.5 lb) and are at least 1.45 m tall. Rafting generally starts at 8, and quad bikes are off limits to under-16s.8

Rip currents are very common and many beaches have no lifeguards. Ask locals about conditions, keep children close and avoid swimming alone. Crocodiles are regularly seen near some Pacific surf beaches, from Playa Azul to Playa Esterillos.38

Driving without a seat belt or a child seat carries very high fines, and most hire companies offer child seats.15

Emergency numbers

Dial 911 for an ambulance, the fire service or the police. Costa Rica's tourism board confirms that you do not need a local line to call it.168

National Children's Hospital (Hospital Nacional de Niños), San José: (506) 25 23 36 00.17

UK: if something happens to a relative abroad, the FCDO in London answers on 020 7008 5000, 24 hours a day. U.S.: Embassy in San José +506-2519-2000; Bureau of Consular Affairs 1-888-407-4747 from the United States and Canada, 1-202-501-4444 from elsewhere.167

The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.

Your questions

eSIM Costa Rica: frequently asked questions

Questions about the eSIM

Is my phone compatible?

On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.

Detailed iPhone and Android guide

When does my plan start?

The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.

Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?

Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.

What happens when my data runs out?

The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.

Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?

No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.

Questions about the trip

Do I need a visa to visit Costa Rica?

Not as a tourist: British and U.S. citizens can stay up to 180 days without a visa. The immigration officer decides the exact period on arrival, so check your entry stamp.

How long must my passport be valid for Costa Rica?

For British passports, at least 1 day after the day you leave Costa Rica. The U.S. State Department asks for a passport valid for the whole stay and warns that a damaged passport can be refused.

Do I need a return ticket to enter Costa Rica?

Yes. The immigration official will ask to see a return or onward ticket on arrival, and may ask you to show that you have enough money for your stay.

My child was born in Costa Rica: is there anything to know?

Yes. Children born in Costa Rica are Costa Rican citizens and need an exit permit from immigration to leave the country. Check with Costa Rican immigration before you travel.

I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?

From the UK, a letter of permission from everyone else with parental responsibility, plus a birth or adoption certificate. U.S. guidance suggests a consent letter from the other parent, preferably in English and notarized.

Which vaccinations are compulsory for Costa Rica?

A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a country listed as a transmission risk, such as some countries in South America or Africa. Ask your doctor about anything else well before you go.

Can I pay in U.S. dollars in Costa Rica?

Yes. The currency is the colón, but U.S. dollars and major credit cards are widely accepted. Cash machines are found throughout the country.

Do I need a plug adapter in Costa Rica?

UK travellers do: sockets take standard US two-pin plugs at 110 V. Plugs from the United States fit as they are. Check that chargers accept 110 V.

Can I drive in Costa Rica with my licence?

A UK photocard licence is valid for up to 180 days, depending on the stay granted. U.S. drivers need their passport plus a U.S. licence or an international driving permit.

What is the emergency number in Costa Rica?

911, for an ambulance, the fire service or the police. You do not need a local line: call from your usual number.

What is the time difference between the UK and Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is 6 hours behind the UK in winter and 7 hours behind in summer.

When is the rainy season in Costa Rica?

On the Pacific side, from May to October; the dry season runs from December to March. GOV.UK describes June to November as the peak rainy season and hurricane season.

How old must children be to go zip lining?

At least 6, with a minimum weight of 22 kg and a height of at least 1.45 m, according to Costa Rica's tourism board.
