Practical guide
Planning a family trip to Canada? Most of the preparation happens before you book: an eTA for each traveller flying in (U.S. citizens are exempt), papers for the children and solid health insurance. Every fact below comes from an official source, cited and dated.
Entry requirements for Canada
British citizens
You do not need a visa for short visits, normally up to 6 months. If you fly in, you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA); you do not need one if you arrive by land or sea.12
Apply only on the official Government of Canada website: an eTA costs 7 Canadian dollars, and some unauthorised websites charge for the same service. Most are approved within minutes, but it is best to get yours before you book flights.21
Your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay. The eTA is linked to it and lasts up to five years or until the passport expires: a new passport needs a new eTA.12
If you change planes in another country, check its rules: many only allow entry with at least 6 months left on your passport.1
Border officials may ask for a return or onward ticket and proof of enough money for your stay, even if you are staying with family or friends.1
Each child needs their own passport and their own eTA: you apply for a child on a separate form, as each application covers one person.342
A child travelling alone or with only one parent or guardian should carry a letter of consent from the parent who is not travelling. Immigration officers may question children in simple language to check for any concern about abduction.1
Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter with their contact details and the trip details is usually enough; a birth or adoption certificate helps show your relationship.5
Declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty. Banned food products are confiscated and you could be fined.1
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK, IRCC (Government of Canada), Canada Border Services Agency, IRCC Help Centre. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
U.S. citizens
U.S. citizens do not need a tourist visa for visits of less than 180 days, and are exempt from the eTA. Canadian law requires everyone to show proof of citizenship and identity: a valid U.S. passport, passport card or NEXUS card.62
Visits longer than 180 days generally require a visa. To fly back into the U.S. from Canada, you must show a U.S. passport book or another approved ID.6
If you travel with a minor without having full custody, the Canada Border Services Agency requires a letter of authorization from the child's parents or guardians.6
Returning to the U.S. by land or sea, U.S. citizen children under 16 may present an original or copy of their birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or a Naturalization Certificate.7
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, IRCC (Government of Canada), U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.
Health and insurance
No vaccinations are compulsory to enter Canada. UK travellers should check the latest vaccine advice at least 8 weeks before the trip; U.S. travellers should be up to date with the vaccinations the CDC advises. Ask your doctor before you go.8910
Treatment can be very expensive and there are no special arrangements for British visitors: make sure your travel insurance covers local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation.9
For U.S. travellers, the Canadian public system does not treat non-Canadians for free, and Medicare and Medicaid apply abroad only in very limited cases. The State Department strongly recommends insurance covering medical evacuation, including air ambulance for remote areas like the Arctic.10
For urgent care, go to a hospital emergency room or a walk-in clinic. Waits for problems that are not life-threatening can be very long, and in Quebec some health professionals may only speak French.910
Carry prescription medicine in its original labelled packaging, with a copy of the prescription, and check that it is legal in Canada.10
Money and payments
The currency is the Canadian dollar (CAD). Card acceptance is very high, and many marked cash machines take bank and credit cards.8
Amounts of 10,000 Canadian dollars or more, or the equivalent in other currencies, must be declared on arrival and on departure.11
UK licence holders: licence rules vary by province and you may need an international driving permit (IDP). Hire companies often ask for an IDP, a year of driving experience and a higher minimum age.13
U.S. licence holders: your licence is valid for visitors, proof of auto insurance is required and U.S. auto insurance is accepted for tourists. The CAA honours AAA memberships.14
Traffic drives on the right, and distances and speeds are in kilometres. An approved child car seat is required throughout the country, and some road signs, especially in Quebec, are only in French.1514
Never overtake a stopped school bus with its hazard lights flashing. Using a hand-held phone while driving is banned.815
Winter driving can be dangerous: some provinces require snow tyres, and snowstorms and avalanches often close highways in Alberta and British Columbia. Road conditions are available on 511.141315
Public transport serves all cities and most major towns; rail is limited outside populated areas, but domestic flights are widespread.14168
Time zones and seasons
Canada has six time zones. From the UK, Vancouver is 8 hours behind GMT, Toronto and Montreal 5 hours, Halifax 4 hours and St John's in Newfoundland 3 and a half hours.1715
For U.S. travellers, the zones match the mainland U.S.: Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa are on New York time, Vancouver on Los Angeles time. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI are 1 hour ahead of Eastern Time, Newfoundland 1 hour 30 minutes.18
Canadian clocks go forward on the second Sunday of March and back on the first Sunday of November. The UK changes on other dates, so for a few weeks the gap is one hour shorter.15
Winters can be harsh: cold in the south, extremely cold in the north, with lows below -40°C. Winter storms are frequent from November to April.141513
In summer, average highs reach 26°C in Montreal and Toronto. Wildfires are common, especially in the west, and most active from May to September: they can disrupt travel and affect air quality.1714
Staying connected as a family
Canada has 4G and 5G networks, but coverage depends on where you are, and there are large areas with no mobile signal at all. The networks your eSIM uses are listed under mobile networks.151612
Before a long drive or a trip to the far north, tell someone who is not travelling with you about your route: emergency help and search and rescue are limited in the Arctic.1213
Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The installation guide takes a few minutes.
The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a local number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.
Travelling with children
On hikes and camping trips, take all rubbish and food scraps with you so you do not attract animals, and keep a safe distance from wildlife, especially where bears have been sighted.13
Ticks are among the health risks: after walks in woods or long grass, check children's skin and scalp carefully.919
Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of the Canadian Rockies, including Banff and Lake Louise: take it into account when planning hikes with children.9
Keep photos of every passport, eTA approval and consent letter on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.
Emergency numbers
Dial 911 for police, fire and ambulance anywhere in Canada. For maritime emergencies, the coastguard answers on 1 800 463 4393.2010
In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative abroad.20
U.S. citizens can call the State Department on 1-888-407-4747, toll-free from the U.S. and Canada, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday to Friday.14
The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.
Your questions
eSIM Canada: frequently asked questions
Questions about the eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.
The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.
Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?
Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.
Do I keep my usual number?
Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.
What happens when my data runs out?
The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.
Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?
There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.
Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?
No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.
Questions about the trip
Do I need a visa or an eTA for Canada?
British citizens need no visa for short visits, normally up to 6 months, but need an eTA to fly in. U.S. citizens need neither a tourist visa for stays under 180 days nor an eTA.
Do my children need their own eTA?
Yes. Each application covers one person, so you submit a separate form for each child, taking care to enter the child's passport number correctly.
How long must my passport be valid for Canada?
For British passports, for the length of your planned stay. If you transit through another country, check its rules: many require 6 months' validity. U.S. citizens need a valid passport, passport card or NEXUS card.
I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?
A letter of consent from the other parent, with their contact details and the trip details. Officers may question children at the border. A birth certificate helps show your relationship.
Can U.S. children drive back across the border without a passport?
U.S. citizen children under 16 returning by land or sea may show an original or copy of their birth certificate. Adults flying back to the U.S. need a passport book or another approved ID.
Are any vaccinations compulsory for Canada?
No vaccination is required to enter Canada. Check that the whole family's routine vaccinations are up to date and ask your doctor well before you travel.
Is healthcare free for visitors in Canada?
No. Treatment can be very expensive, there are no special arrangements for British visitors, and most hospitals abroad do not accept U.S. health insurance. Take out travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.
Can I drive in Canada with my licence?
U.S. licences are valid for visitors, with proof of insurance. With a UK licence you may need an international driving permit, depending on the province and the hire company. Traffic drives on the right.
What is the time difference with Canada?
From the UK, Toronto and Montreal are 5 hours behind and Vancouver 8 hours behind GMT. For Americans, Canadian zones match the mainland U.S., with Toronto on New York time and Vancouver on Los Angeles time.
Which number should I call in an emergency in Canada?
911 for police, fire and ambulance, anywhere in the country. Call from your usual line: the Sirocco eSIM is for data only.
Is there mobile coverage across Canada?
Not everywhere. Canada has 4G and 5G networks, but there are large areas with no mobile signal. Before a long drive, share your route with someone at home.
