Practical guide

Visiting family in Algeria, or travelling there for the first time? Here is what to sort out before you fly: visas, children's documents, dual nationality, money, driving and emergency numbers, all from official sources, cited and dated.

Entry requirements for Algeria

British citizens

Your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive. You will be refused entry without a valid travel document, or with a passport reported lost or stolen.1

You must have a visa, applied for through the Algerian Consulate in the UK before you travel. Check its validity dates carefully; to extend your stay, apply at the nearest wilaya.1

British-Algerian dual nationals who enter on an Algerian passport must leave on an Algerian passport, and need a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement to return to the UK.21

You need your passport to check in to hotels and to fly within Algeria. If a passport is lost or stolen during your stay, the authorities will ask for a police report when you leave.21

In Algeria, a child is anyone under 19 years and one day, and is considered Algerian if one parent is Algerian. An Algerian or British-Algerian child travelling with one parent needs the 'livret de famille' (original or certified copy) to prove the parental link.1

Algerian children travelling alone need a letter of permission ('autorisation parentale') from a parent or legal guardian. Under Algerian family law, mothers cannot renew their children's passports without the father's written consent, and a dual-national child without a valid Algerian passport cannot leave without the father's written consent or a court's permission.12

Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough, and you might be asked for it at a UK or foreign border.3

British men of Algerian origin may be liable for Algerian national service, even if they have lived outside Algeria. Check your status with the Algerian consulate before you travel.2

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

U.S. citizens

You need a passport valid for at least six months and a visa obtained in advance from an Algerian embassy or consulate. Cruise passengers on an organised shore excursion do not need a visa in advance.4

Algeria treats dual Algerian-American citizens who enter on an Algerian passport solely as Algerian citizens. U.S. citizen women married to Algerians do not need their husband's authorisation to leave.4

Dual-national children leaving Algeria on an Algerian passport with only one parent must show the Algerian family book (livret de famille) to prove the relationship. To fly home, every U.S. citizen, children included, needs a U.S. passport book.45

Always carry your passport, or a copy of it, with you.6

Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.

Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.

Health and insurance

No vaccinations are compulsory, according to the Spanish foreign ministry. GOV.UK adds that you need a yellow fever certificate if you are coming from a country listed as a transmission risk.71

UK travellers: at least 8 weeks before the trip, check the latest vaccine recommendations for Algeria and where to get vaccines on the NHS. U.S. travellers should be up to date on all vaccinations recommended by the CDC. Everyone should see a doctor before leaving.8910

Make sure your travel insurance covers local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation. Private clinics are usually better than government hospitals, and English is not widely spoken.8

U.S. travellers: Medicare and Medicaid do not apply overseas, credit card payment is not usually available and most hospitals require cash. The State Department strongly recommends supplemental insurance covering medical evacuation.9

Carry prescription medicine in its original packaging with your doctor's prescription. The Spanish foreign ministry also suggests a short medical note translated into English or French.97

Money and payments

The currency is the Algerian dinar (DZD). Only travellers with residency status may bring Algerian banknotes in or out, up to 10,000 dinars; visitors can change money at the airport, at banks and in major hotels.1117

Sources differ on when to declare cash on entry and exit. GOV.UK gives a threshold of 5,000 euros; the Italian foreign ministry says that since 1 January 2026 all travellers must declare any sum above 1,000 euros, and the U.S. State Department also gives 1,000 euros.1106

Algeria is a cash society: most credit cards are not accepted outside hotels, and cash machines are not plentiful. Bring enough cash, ideally euros or U.S. dollars.6711

Exchange money only at banks or authorised exchange locations, such as major hotels, and keep the receipts: when you leave, you may need to show that your currency was exchanged legally.6

Plugs and electricity

Electricity is 220/230 volts with European-type plugs, according to the French foreign ministry. UK and U.S. plugs need an adapter, and U.S. chargers must accept 230 volts.12

Getting around and driving

UK licence holders can use a photocard driving licence for up to 3 months after first arriving. The authorities may ask to see an international driving permit, which you cannot buy outside the UK.2

U.S. drivers should get an International Driving Permit before travelling and carry it with their state licence.13

After an accident, contact the police and do not move the vehicles until an officer arrives. The legal alcohol limit for drivers is 0.10 grams per litre, according to the Italian foreign ministry.1310

Trains run between the coastal cities and are generally safe and reliable, and Algiers has an urban railway along the coast. For long distances inside the country, the Spanish foreign ministry considers flying the most advisable option.137

Time difference, climate and weekends

Algeria is one hour ahead of the UK in winter and on the same time in summer.10

The north has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, humid summers and mild, often rainy winters: in Algiers, average temperatures are around 28 degrees in summer and 13 in winter. The Sahara has a desert climate with big temperature swings.10

The weekend is Friday and Saturday, although supermarkets, shops and post offices open on Saturdays.12

Staying connected as a family

Mobile coverage, including 4G, reaches the main urban areas of the coast and the high plateaux. In remote areas, particularly in the south, it can be patchy or unavailable, and some online maps may not be accurate. The networks your eSIM uses are listed in the mobile networks section.102

Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The installation guide takes a few minutes.

Before leaving the big cities to visit relatives, download offline maps and useful documents while the signal is good.

The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call an Algerian number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.

Travelling with children

Tap water is often not drinkable, and many places serve it unless you ask for bottled water. Ice in drinks may be made with tap water.9

Teach children not to touch or feed animals, even friendly ones. After a bite, scratch or lick on broken skin, wash the wound straight away with soap and water and see a doctor urgently.14

Ramadan next starts in February 2027. During it, do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public in the daytime, including in your car, and check shop and restaurant opening hours.2

Keep photos of every passport, visa and the livret de famille on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.

Emergency numbers

GOV.UK lists: police 17 or 1548, fire 14, ambulance 1021 (or 16). The Italian foreign ministry specifies 17 from a landline and 1548 from a mobile.15810

The U.S. State Department gives 021711414 for emergency services.9

In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative abroad.15

The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.

Your questions

eSIM Algeria: frequently asked questions

Questions about the eSIM

Is my phone compatible?

On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.

Detailed iPhone and Android guide

When does my plan start?

The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.

Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?

Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.

What happens when my data runs out?

The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.

Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?

No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.

Questions about the trip

Do I need a visa to visit Algeria?

Yes. British citizens apply through the Algerian Consulate in the UK before they travel, and U.S. citizens must obtain a visa in advance from an Algerian embassy or consulate.

How long must my passport be valid for Algeria?

For British passports, at least 6 months after the date you arrive. The U.S. State Department also asks for a passport valid for at least six months.

My child has British and Algerian nationality: which passport should they use?

Algeria considers a child Algerian if one parent is Algerian. A child who enters on an Algerian passport must leave on an Algerian passport, and needs a valid British passport to return to the UK.

I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?

For Algerian or dual-national children, the livret de famille (original or certified copy) to prove your parental link. From the UK, also carry a letter of permission from everyone else with parental responsibility.

Can a mother renew her child's Algerian passport on her own?

No. Under Algerian family law, mothers cannot renew their children's passports without the father's written consent, whereas fathers do not need the mother's consent.

Are any vaccinations compulsory for Algeria?

No, apart from a yellow fever certificate if you are coming from a country listed as a transmission risk. Ask your doctor about anything else well before you go.

Can I take Algerian dinars with me?

Only if you have residency status in Algeria, and then up to 10,000 dinars. Visitors change money once they arrive, at the airport, at banks or in major hotels.

How much cash can I bring into Algeria?

There is no limit on foreign currency, but it must be declared above a threshold: 1,000 euros according to the Italian foreign ministry and the U.S. State Department, 5,000 euros according to GOV.UK.

Can I drive in Algeria with my licence?

A UK photocard licence is valid for up to 3 months after arrival, but carry an international driving permit too. U.S. drivers should get an International Driving Permit in advance.

What is the time difference between the UK and Algeria?

Algeria is one hour ahead of the UK in winter. In summer, when UK clocks go forward, both countries are on the same time.

Which numbers should I call in an emergency in Algeria?

Police 17 (1548 from a mobile), fire 14, ambulance 1021 or 16. Call from your usual line, as the Sirocco eSIM is for data only.

What happens if a passport is lost in Algeria?

The Algerian authorities will ask for a police report when you leave the country, so you will need one before your flight home.
