Practical guide
Planning a family trip to Albania? Here is what to sort out before you fly: entry documents for adults and children, money, driving and emergency numbers. Every fact comes from an official source, cited and dated.
Entry requirements for Albania
British citizens
Your passport must have an expiry date at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Albania.1
You can visit Albania without a visa for up to 90 days in a 180-day period, for tourism or business. To stay longer, apply in advance for a long-stay visa, or for a residence permit from within Albania.1
You will be refused entry without a valid travel document, or if you try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.1
Customs rules are strict: declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.1
Under UK law, you need the permission of everyone with parental responsibility before taking a child abroad. A letter from them, with their contact details and the trip details, is usually enough, and a birth or adoption certificate helps to show your relationship.2
You might be asked for that letter at a UK or foreign border. Single parents whose family name differs from the child's should also carry a divorce or marriage certificate.2
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: GOV.UK. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
U.S. citizens
Your passport should be valid for at least three months from the date you arrive.3
You may enter Albania as a tourist without a visa, and U.S. citizens may stay up to one year without applying for a residency permit.3
Children too: all U.S. citizens need a U.S. passport book to re-enter the United States by air.4
Families with Albanian roots: Albanian law allows dual citizenship, and Albanian citizenship may be acquired at birth. The State Department publishes guidance on dual nationality and on preventing international child abduction.53
Checked on 11 October 2026. Source: U.S. Department of State, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Rules can change: check them again before you travel.
Travelling on another passport, such as Irish, Canadian or Australian? The rules may differ: check with your own government before you go.
Health and insurance
No vaccinations are compulsory for Albania. The one exception flagged by the UK government: a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk.61
UK travellers: at least 8 weeks before the trip, check the latest vaccine advice for Albania and where to get vaccines. U.S. travellers: make sure everyone is up to date with the vaccinations the CDC advises for visitors to Albania. Either way, ask your doctor or a travel clinic in good time.789
Albania is not among the places where a UK GHIC can be used. Take out travel insurance that covers local treatment, medical evacuation and repatriation, and keep funds available for any treatment.107
U.S. travellers: Medicare and Medicaid do not apply overseas, and hospitals and doctors often require payment up front. The State Department strongly recommends supplemental insurance covering medical evacuation.8
Carry prescription medicine in its original packaging, with your doctor's prescription.8
Money and payments
The currency is the Albanian lek (ALL), which cannot be converted outside Albania.1112
Albania is primarily a cash economy and most businesses do not accept credit cards, but cash machines are widely available in cities. Where cards are accepted, fees can be high.513
Most hotels can be paid in euros, but elsewhere euros are rarely accepted: plan to pay in lek.1311
Cash of more than 1,000,000 lek (a little under 10,000 euros) must be declared at the border.6
Getting around and driving
UK licence holders may find a 1968 international driving permit useful alongside their licence. The 1949 permit is no longer accepted, and you cannot buy an IDP outside the UK.14
U.S. visitors can drive on a U.S. or international licence while non-resident. If stopped, you may be asked for your passport too.15
Traffic drives on the right. Everyone in the car must wear a seat belt, phones may only be used hands-free, and there is zero tolerance for alcohol. Dipped headlights are required all year, even in daytime.1511
Driving your own car? You must carry a green card as proof of insurance. After any accident, even a minor one, stay at the scene until the police arrive.14
Without a car, buses are regulated and generally considered safe; make inter-city trips in daylight. Marked taxis are recommended. Rail service is limited and unreliable, and there are no domestic flights.15
Time and climate: when to go
Albania is one hour ahead of the UK all year round.12
The coast has a Mediterranean climate and the eastern mountains a continental one, much like central Italy. Summer can reach 40 degrees, while winter can drop to -10 degrees in the mountains of the north and north-east.1112
From December to February, severe weather may cause flooding, particularly in the north, and heavy snow can disrupt transport in the mountains.14
Staying connected as a family
Mobile coverage is good across almost the whole country, with 4G available, but the signal is very weak in the north-east and almost absent in the mountains along the border with Montenegro. The networks your eSIM uses are listed in the mobile networks section.12
Free Wi-Fi is fairly common in bars, restaurants and other public places: ask staff for the password.12
Online maps are not always reliable for route planning in Albania. On walks you plan yourself, take a charged phone with GPS and a spare power bank.11
Install everyone's eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, so the whole family is online as soon as you land. The installation guide takes a few minutes.
The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: to call a local number, use your usual line at your operator's rates.
Travelling with children
Do not drink the tap water: stick to bottled water, and remember that ice may be made with tap water. If your children drink milk, make sure it is UHT or pasteurised.78
On the beach, follow lifeguards' instructions, warning signs and flags, and ask locally about jellyfish or sea urchins. Book water sports only through a licensed centre.14
Teach children not to touch or feed animals, even friendly ones. After a bite or scratch, wash the wound straight away with soap and water and see a doctor urgently.9
Wildfires are common from April to October: do not light fires or barbecues except in designated and marked areas.14
Keep photos of every passport and permission letter on your phone, and a paper copy in a separate bag.
Emergency numbers
GOV.UK lists: police 112, ambulance 127, fire 128.16
The French foreign ministry describes 112 as the number for all emergencies, with calls passed to the right service, and adds 129 for the police. Not every operator speaks English, but they will try to connect you with someone who does.178
In the UK, the FCDO answers 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000 if something has happened to a friend or relative abroad.16
The Sirocco eSIM cannot make calls: dial emergency numbers from your usual line.
Your questions
eSIM Albania: frequently asked questions
Questions about the eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
On the phone, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it accepts eSIMs. It must not be locked to a network (a phone bought with a contract). Sirocco does not check the model: you confirm each phone yourself when you order.
The eSIM activates the first time it connects to a network at your destination; the plan runs from that moment. You can install it before you leave.
Can I buy the whole family's eSIMs in one go?
Yes. You choose the destination, the dates and the number of travellers (up to 10), then a plan for each person. You pay once. Each traveller then receives their personal installation link, without creating an account. From 3 eSIMs in the same order, 10% is taken off the total, rounded in your favour. The discount is shown before payment.
Do I keep my usual number?
Yes. The Sirocco eSIM is added alongside your usual line, which stays active for calls and texts, at your operator's rates. The Sirocco eSIM is for data only: internet calling and messaging apps work with your data.
What happens when my data runs out?
The connection stops; nothing extra is charged. You can top up the eSIM concerned from the trip dashboard, on the same eSIM, with no reinstallation.
Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?
There is no data cap, but a fair use policy applies. 1 GB a day at full speed, reset every 24 hours from activation. Then reduced to 512 kbit/s.
Can I transfer an eSIM that is already installed?
No: an installed eSIM stays tied to the phone it was installed on. Before installation, the organiser can reassign an eSIM to another traveller from the trip dashboard.
Questions about the trip
Do I need a visa to visit Albania?
Not for tourism. British citizens can stay up to 90 days in a 180-day period without a visa; U.S. citizens can enter as tourists without one and stay up to one year without a residency permit.
How long must my passport be valid for Albania?
For British passports, at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Albania. The U.S. State Department says at least three months from the date you arrive.
Can I travel on a passport I reported lost and then found?
No. GOV.UK warns that you will be refused entry if you try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen. Apply for a new one well before you go.
I am travelling alone with my children: what should I carry?
From the UK, a letter of permission from everyone else with parental responsibility, plus a birth or adoption certificate. Bring a marriage or divorce certificate if your family name differs from your child's.
Are any vaccinations compulsory for Albania?
No, apart from a yellow fever certificate for travellers arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk. Check vaccine advice with your doctor well before you go: GOV.UK suggests at least 8 weeks ahead.
Can I use my GHIC in Albania?
No. Albania is not on the NHS list of places where a UK GHIC can be used, so take out travel insurance that covers medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation.
Can I pay by card in Albania?
Not often. Albania is primarily a cash economy and most businesses do not accept credit cards, but cash machines are widely available in cities. Most hotels can be paid in euros.
Can I drive in Albania with my licence?
UK drivers may find a 1968 international driving permit useful alongside their licence. U.S. visitors can use a U.S. or international licence while non-resident. Traffic drives on the right.
Which numbers should I call in an emergency in Albania?
112 for the police and for any emergency, 127 for an ambulance and 128 for the fire service. Call from your usual line.
What is the time difference between the UK and Albania?
Albania is one hour ahead of the UK, in summer and in winter, as it shares Italy's time zone.
Can children drink the tap water in Albania?
No. GOV.UK advises against drinking tap water and recommends bottled water only. Choose UHT or pasteurised milk, and be aware that ice may be made with tap water.
Is there mobile coverage across Albania?
Coverage is good across almost the whole country, according to the Italian foreign ministry, but very weak in the north-east mountains near Montenegro. Download offline maps before heading there.
